Helen Frances Carman, 89, formerly a long time resident of Weed Hill Road, Luthers Mills, Burlington Township, Pa., passed away early Saturday morning, May 3, 2014 at home in Troy, Pa., surrounded by her loving family.
Helen was born in North Towanda Township, Pa., on Jan. 1, 1925, a daughter of Thomas and Laura Corson Driscoll and in her youth attended St. Agnes School in Towanda. Helen was employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Bradford County Manor in West Burlington Township for 18 years. She was later employed with the custodial department of GTE Sylvania in Towanda for several years and provided in-home care for various families in the area as well. Helen loved spending time with her family and will be fondly be remembered for her sense of humor. She also loved nature, especially bird watching, animals, flowers and gardening. Helen was a member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Towanda, the church Pastoral Out-Reach Committee and the Bradford County Republican Women.
Surviving are her children Ralph Carman and wife Donna of North Towanda, Ronald Carman and wife Donna of Canton, John "Jack" Carman and Karen of Northumberland, Pa., Ann Marie Hodge and husband Wes of Rome Twp.; sisters Sylvia Hilfiger of Towanda, Mary Kelly and husband Jack of Apalachin, N.Y.; her sister-in-law Betty Driscoll, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands Ralph Vanderpool — who was killed in action during World War II in 1945, and Donald Carman in 1975; a son Richard Carman in 2013; and a brother Thomas J. Driscoll in 1991.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
A mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 10 a.m. at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Third Street, Towanda, Pa., with the Rev. Edward Michelini, pastor, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills, Pa. The family suggests that contributions may be directed to the Bradford County Humane Society, P.O.
