Helen May Vanderpoel

Helen May Vanderpoel, 86, formerly of Carriage Estates, Elmira, N.Y. passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility in Elmira. Helen was born in Towanda, Pa., on Sept. 4, 1927 the daughter of Sherman and Pearl Chilson Vanderpoel. She was a graduate of Towanda High School class of 1946. In early years, Helen was employed by Remington Rand and was later employed by Thatcher Glass for many years until her retirement. She enjoyed knitting.

Surviving are her sisters Leona VanNess and Ruth Johnson, both of Towanda; special friend and care giver Susan Edger of Horseheads, N.Y.; special friends Louella Pronti and Mary Nickerson, both of Elmira; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers Lawrence and Edward Vanderpoel and sisters Josephine MacMorran, Anna L. Hadlock, Betty Walker and Mary Benjamin.

The family extends their greatest appreciation to the second floor staff of the Chemung County Nursing Facility for their excellent care.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, at the French Asylum Cemetery, Asylum Township, Pa.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa.
