Jean Ann Comstock Hardenstine, well known-area nurse of New Era, Pa., passed away June 18, 2013, at Memorial Hospital, Towanda, Pa. Jean was born on July 31, 1927 in Berwick, Pa.
Jean attended the New Albany schools, graduating from New Albany High School with the class of 1945.
She was the daughter of Lois Comstock, and stepdaughter of John A. Robinson.
After graduation, Jean entered nurses' training school at Bloomsburg Hospital, and later transferred to Polyclinic Hospital, Harrisburg, graduating in 1948.
She was employed as a staff nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla., from 1949-1951, then moved to New York City and became head nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Jean worked at Mills Hospital in Towanda from 1955–1959, and when Memorial Hospital opened in 1959 she served as 3–11 supervisor until 1980. She was nurse manager of the medical–surgical unit from 1980 until her retirement in 1992.
Jean married Francis D. Hardenstine on June 13, 1953. From that time, they lived together on their dairy farm in New Era and celebrated their 60th anniversary last week.
After her retirement from nursing, Jean served as president of the New Albany Community Library and Memorial Hospital Home Health Board.
She is survived by her husband, Francis; son, Peter; daughter, Tanya Olaviany; son-in law, Victor Olaviany; granddaughters, Amanda and Caitlin Olaviany, who she thought the world of; half brothers, John A. Robinson, Jr. of Silvara, Robert Robinson of Standing Stone, and Terry Robinson of Hughesville.
She was preceded in death by her mother, stepfather and half brother, Stanley Robinson.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2013, at the funeral home with Pastor Donald Littleton officiating. Interment will follow in the New Era Cemetery, Terry Twp., Pa.
