Millicent E. Machmer

On the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, Millicent Evelyn (Crawford) Machmer of Union Township passed away quietly at her residence. She was 91 years of age.

Born Jan. 12, 1922 in West LeRoy, she was a daughter of James and Ada (Hardy) Crawford. She was the wife of the late Lawrence Machmer, with whom she raised two sons and shared 69 years until Lawrence's passing in 2009.

Millicent was a quiet, unpretentious lady who was devoted to her home and family. As the wife of a dairy farmer she was well versed in the trials and triumphs of commercial farming. She was adept at all manner of farm chores, and ably assisted her husband with the day-to-day tasks until her sons were old enough to share in the responsibilities. She also worked for a while as a meat cutter, acquiring skills that came in quite handy when one of the men of the house brought home big game.

Millicent was a volunteer at the Canton Clothing Center for many years. She also enjoyed gardening and travel. She had a real passion for quilting and enjoyed the fellowship of the other women as much as the sewing itself. She loved her family with a quiet, unassuming nature that endeared her to all. She also shared a close walk with the Lord and was a longtime member of the Ward United Methodist Church. Her faith gave her strength through the tumultuous times of life.

Millicent is survived by her sons Kenneth (and Barbara) Machmer and Dale (and Barbara) Machmer, all of Canton; grandchildren Delisa (and Bradley) Bennett of Raleigh, N.C., L. Allyn (and Linda) Machmer of Canton, Christopher (and Agnes) Machmer of Moscow, Pa., Melissa Machmer of Williamsport and Valerie Machmer of Harrisburg; as well as six great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Lawrence, she was preceded in death by brothers Lyle Crawford and Robert Crawford, and sister Ellen Davis.

Calling hours will be noon until 2 p.m., Monday, Aug. 26, at Morse & Kleese Funeral Home, 94 N. Center St., Canton. Service will be at 2 p.m. with Rev. Duane Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in North Union Cemetery. The family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to the Ward United Methodist Church, c/o Maxine Shedden, 474 Farmer Rd., Canton, PA 17724
