Rita Waples Barrett, 87, of Fairfield, Iowa formerly a long-time resident of Wolcott Hollow Road, Athens was born into Eternal Life Monday, March 18, 2013 from the Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield, Iowa.
Rita was born in Johnstown on March 12, 1926 one of six children to James and Esther Bowser Waples. She grew up in Mildred and was a graduate of St. Basil's High School in Dushore class of 1945. Following high school she attended Marywood College studying nursing in Scranton.
On Dec. 27, 1948 Rita married Anthony James "Tony" Barrett of Asylum Township at St. Francis Catholic Church in Mildred. In 1955, the couple entered into farming purchasing their own farm in Athens Township which they operated until 1995 when they sold the farm to their son Tom. After selling the Farm, Rita and Tony traveled the country together and even volunteered at Yellow Stone National Park.
Rita was a communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ridgebury and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of the Diahoga Grange for 45 years. One of the greatest events in her life was meeting and hugging Mother Theresa at a Scranton Deanery meeting.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Annette Forrest Barrett of Lambertville, Michigan; daughter, Esther Barrett Urban and son in law (Tom), with whom she resided of Fairfield, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Kathy Sullivan Barrett of Athens; granddaughters, Jennifer Barrett White (John) of Dayton, Ohio, Tiffany Barrett Sanders (Mike) of Perrysburg, Ohio, Jessica Barrett Swanbeck (Tim) of Toledo, Ohio, Shelley Urban of Fairfield, Iowa and Kerry Barrett Bocko (Joe) of Elmira, N.Y.; grandson, Kelly Barrett and wife Kate VanNote Barrett of Athens; great grandchildren, Timothy, Aidan, Zachary, Margaret and Annaleise White, Natalie, Courtney Sanders and Robbie, Paige, Maxwell Swanbeck, and Kellan Barrett; brothers and sister-in-law, Robert and Lois Waples of Suffield, Ohio, Eugene Waples of Uniontown, Ohio; sister-in-law, Betty Barrett of Marshview; andnumerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by; her husband of 53 years, Tony on Oct. 24, 2002, son, Thomas Anthony Barrett on Sept. 25, 2008, infant daughter, Patricia Ann Barrett, infant twin sons, Anthony Mark Barrett and William Joseph Barrett, brothers, James and John Waples, brothers and sister-in-law, Joe and Alice Waples, Jack and Serena Waples, brothers-in-law, Joe and Patrick Barrett, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Eugene and Mary Barrett and nephews Kevin Barrett and Harry Waples and niece Nancy Waples.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. on March 24 at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda with Recitation of the Rosary at 2 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. on March 26, 2013 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Ridgebury Township with interment following in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery.
