Ruth Sterling, 97, formerly of Troy, Pa., passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, June 13, 2013, at her daughter's home in Blossburg.
Ruth Eleanor Nash was born in Elmira, N.Y., on Oct. 16, 1915, a daughter of Everett and Anna (Mason) Nash. She was a 1933 graduate of Mansfield High School. In addition to caring for her family and home, Ruth enjoyed working. She was employed by the Artistic Card Co. in Elmira, Stauffer's Store in Mainesburg and later was an aide at the Troy hospital for several years. She married Paul Sterling at the Gillett Baptist Church. They shared 23 years before his passing on June 11, 1992.
Ruth attended the State Road Baptist Church in Mainesburg, the Gillett Baptist Church and their Breans Women's Group. She also especially enjoyed going to the Old Covert Church on Armenia Mountain for Mother's Day. She was a member of the Austinville Lady Rebekahs. Family was most important in Ruth's life. She also camped, traveled and visited all the states. She and Paul also enjoyed wintering in Dade City, Fla.
Surviving are her four children, Janice (Lyle) Foster of Troy, Ken Welch of Granville Summit, Phyllis (Kirk) Smethers of Blossburg and Charles (Linda) Welch of Dade City, Fla.; several grandchildren; great grandchildren; great great grandchildren; three step-children, Paula Mallory of Troy, Stanley (Debbie) Sterling and Steve (Sally) Sterling all of Gillett; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband Paul, she was predeceased by her sister, Evelyn Cook, and an infant brother and infant sister, Everett Jr. and Lillian.
Calling hours are 11 – 12 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, at Pepper Funeral Home, 578 Springbrook Dr., in Canton. The funeral will follow with Rev. Kenneth Marple officiating. Burial will follow in Gillett Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mrs. Sterling's name may be made to Covert Church, c/o RR 1 Box 368, Troy, PA 16947.
