Samuel C. Jerome Jr.

Samuel C. Jerome Jr., 83, of Sayre, and former Sayre businessman, passed away Saturday evening, Dec. 8, 2012 at his home following declining health.

"Sam" as he was known by his family and friends, was born June 20, 1929 in Endicott, N.Y. the son of the late Samuel C. Jerome Sr. and Teresa Marie Charles Jerome. In early years, Sam was employed by the Stackmore Company in Owego, N.Y. and played on the Stackmore Softball team from 1948-49. He subsequently served four years in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-55 during the Korean War. Following completion of his military service, Sam owned a pool hall where he excelled in the sport. In November of 1959, Sam went to work in the mill department at the Ingersoll-Rand in Athens where he remained until 1971. On June 13, 1966 he married Gladys Jean Wrisley. Sam later managed the Elks Bowling Lanes in Owego from 1972-76 and was the pro manager at Mid Way Lanes in Vestal, N.Y. He continued his bowling knowledge by opening his own pro shop in April 1976. Sam Jerome's Pro Shop was a standard in Sayre for almost two decades.

Following his retirement, Sam worked part-time at Dick's Sporting Goods, Tioga Park and State Line Auto Auction. Sam was a well-known highly accomplished bowler having won numerous individual matches and tournaments in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. He also achieved several records in doubles and league team competition and was very proud of his all time high game of 279 and 3 game total of 704.

In addition to his love of bowling and playing pool Sam enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling and playing cards.

He was a member of the Epiphany Parish in Sayre, Valley Bowling Hall of Fame 1980-81 and was a Charter member of the Towanda-Ulster Bowling Association Hall of Fame 1982.

Surviving are his sons, Ed Jerome and fiancé Patti of Barton, N.Y. and Samuel C. Jerome III. and wife Sharon of Minerva, N.Y.; daughters Sandy Depew and husband Fred of Jacksonville, Fla. and Vicky Deloney and husband Joey of Pleasant View, Tenn.; grandchildren Karen Shipman and husband Andy, Kelly Jerome and fiancé Mark, Kim Delozier and husband Scott and Stephanie Scott and husband Aaron; and great grandchildren Nathaniel Delozier, Isabella Delozier, Lyndon Shipman and Destiny Riley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by; his wife of 46 years, Gladys Jean Wrisley Jerome on October 3, 2012, and by brothers, Gabriel Peter Jerome and John Daniel Jerome.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Alteri-Bowen Funeral Home, 314 Desmond St., Sayre.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012 at the Epiphany Parish, S. Elmer Ave. Sayre. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Owego, N.Y. with full military honors.
