Thalia Machmer

On the evening of Friday, April 4, 2014, former Canton resident Thalia (English) Machmer passed away quietly at Rose View Center in Williamsport. She was 90 years of age.

Born Oct. 18, 1923, she was a daughter of Paul and Helen (Selleck) English. Thalia attended Canton High School where she was active in sports, especially softball and basketball. She graduated with the class of 1941. While in high school she met Irvin Machmer, her future husband, but their courtship was interrupted by the war. During this time Thalia went to Washington, D.C. where she attended the Western Union Institute. When Irvin returned home the two were wed. They settled in Canton and raised a son and a daughter. Thalia was employed for many years as an accountant for the former Canton Telephone Company. She was active for many years in the Village Improvement Association, (VIA), serving as its treasurer and being honored with the title, Woman of The Year. Thalia also served as treasurer of her church, the Canton Ecumenical Parish. Whether as a member of the VIA, or the Canton Area Recreation Association helping to improve the War Memorial Pool and surrounding areas, or as a tutor with the literacy program at the Green Free Library, Thalia always gave of her time and efforts most generously. She enjoyed the fellowship and the outings with the Red Hatters and was also an avid collector of toothpick holders, having been duly recognized by the National Toothpick Holder Collectors' Association for one of her rare exhibits.

Thalia is survived by her son, Fred (and Judy) Machmer of Jersey Shore; daughter Marilyn Machmer of Trenton, N.J.; grandchildren David (and Ellen) Machmer and Brian (and Stephanie) Machmer; and great-grandchildren Samantha, Jesse, Patrick and Jacob. She was preceded in death by her husband Irvin Machmer; brothers Raymond, Paul and Harvey English; and sisters Harriett Shoemaker, Esther Mitchell, Marilyn Tilburg, Geraldine Freeman and infant sister Ruth English.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 9 at the Canton Ecumenical Parish. Service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be in North Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Thalia's name may be directed to the Canton Ecumenical Parish, 103 N. Center Street, Canton, or to the Village Improvement Association, c/o Marie O'Hara, 50 Little St., Canton, PA 17724. Professional services have been entrusted to Morse & Kleese Funeral home.
