Jessie M. Hawthorne, 90, former resident of Canton, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at the home of her daughter, Myra Machmer, in Lanse, Pa.

Jessie was born in Vienna, Ga., on July 3, 1923, a daughter of the late J.J. and Grace (Goodwyne) Mixon. She attended Lakeview High School in Winter Garden, Fla. On Oct. 17, 1945, Jessie married the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Hawthorne while he was stationed in the Army at Winter Garden. The Hawthornes made their home in Canton where Jessie worked at Swayze's Folding Box Co. until they started a family. Bob and Jessie shared 52 years of loving marriage until his passing in June 1998.

Jessie enjoyed being a "stay at home" wife and mother. She loved to cook and was always ready to help at church dinners. She was one of the best cooks; her specialty being homemade bread and southern meals. Jessie cleaned many a sink and buckets full of freshly caught fish and she sure knew how to prepare them. The Hawthorne garden was her summer pastime along with all the canning of fruits and vegetables. Jessie loved babies and cared for them in her home. She was much appreciated for her help in raising her grandsons and visits with her great grandchildren. Also special to Jessie were times spent visiting with neighbors and fellowship with her church families. She was a member and attended church services faithfully at Canton's First Baptist Church and Faith Baptist Church. She also attended the Lanse Evangelical Free Church in Lanse, Pa.

Surviving are her two daughters and a son-in-law, Mitzie and Terry Christine of Edenton, N.C., and Myra Machmer of Lanse; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Curtis and Vonda Hawthorne of Rock Hill, S.C.; five grandchildren, Chris (Sharon) VanDyke of Asheville, N.C., Jasen (Jennifer) VanDyke of Duncan, S.C., Ryan Hawthorne, Evan Hawthorne and Adam Hawthorne all of Rock Hill; six great-grandchildren, Sayre VanDyke, Coleman VanDyke and Carter VanDyke all of Asheville and Lillianna VanDyke, Chloe VanDyke and Joshua VanDyke all of Duncan. She also leaves two nieces, eight nephews and their families.

In addition to her beloved husband Bob, she was predeceased by two sisters; Jackie (Joe) Pitts and Mona (Ed) Hester; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Josephine Bailey and Dean Hawthorne.

Family invites friends to call from 12–1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, at Pepper Funeral Home, 578 Springbrook Drive in Canton. The funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. with Pastor John Lattimer of the Faith Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, her family suggests memorials in Mrs. Hawthorne's name be made to Faith Baptist Church Building Fund, 2307 Southside Road, Canton, PA 17724; or to Clearfield Gideons, c/o Ashley Kline P.O. Box 93 Osceola Mill, PA 16666.
