Norma Marie Westbrook Benjamin, 94, of Towanda, passed away Saturday evening, Dec. 8, 2012 at Memorial Hospital, Towanda. Norma was born in Asylum Township, on Aug. 27, 1918 the fourth child and third daughter of Robert "Rob" Colvin and Martha Grace Post Westbrook. She began school in the little schoolhouse in Ghent and following high school gained employment as a waitress in area restaurants. Norma was a veteran of World War II. having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. On Nov. 10, 1943 at Scranton, she joined the Women's Army Air Corps (WAAC), attaining the rank of corporal. During her service, she worked as a cook and drove a Jeep taking officers to their appointments. She served her country honorably until discharged on Feb. 22, 1946 at Fort Dix, N.J. On Oct. 6, 1955, she married Elias Benjamin in Towanda where the couple made their home. She was preceded in death by her husband on Aug. 15, 1980. Norma was employed by Sayre Lingerie for 37 years until her retirement in 1981. She was a member of the Union Corners United Methodist Church and Towanda American Legion Post No. 42. Norma enjoyed reading and cooking. Her love was showered on children in her circle of family and friends.

She is survived by her step daughter, Gloria Benjamin Cox and husband Ira; four step grandchildren; sisters Leona Heath and Marchia Reeve of Towanda; sister in law Alberta Westbrook of Towanda; her husband's niece whom she raised, Rebecca Benjamin of Towanda; and her extended family, numerous additional nieces, nephews and cousins; and a very dear friend, Marcella VanRiper of Sayre. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by her brothers, Lorenzo, Stanley and Robert Westbrook and sisters, Lucy Vanderpool and Irma Dyer.

The funeral and committal service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012 at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with Rev. William Westbrook and Rev. Pam Wright officiating. Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 will accord military honors at the funeral home. There are no calling hours.

Interment will be later in Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills.
