Richard D. "Dick" Spencer, 78, of Columbia Crossroads, Pa., passed away Saturday evening, April 12,2014 at the Bradford County Manor in West Burlington Township, Pa. "Dick," as he was known by his family and friends, was born Jan. 10, 1936 at Mills Hospital in Towanda, Pa., the son of Emmett and Mable Wood Spencer.

He attended school in East Smithfield and later on Jan. 10, 1958 Dick married the former Laura Benninger. Dick was employed by the Calvin Cole Construction Company for over 23 years until his retirement. He enjoyed tractor pulling with his grandson Randy, fishing and restoring old tractors.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Laura Spencer; children, Rickie Spencer and wife Carla of Easley, S.C., Julia Stigers of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandchildren, Jeremy Spencer and wife Nicole of Easley, S.C., Cady Chambers and husband Jason of Charleston, S.C., Randy Pruyne of Columbia Cross Roads, Pa., Sheryl Pruyne who is stationed with the U.S. Navy in Virginia Beach, Va.; a great grandson, Darrien Pruyne of Virginia Beach, Va.; brother, Henry Spencer of Milan, Pa.; brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Lisa Spencer of Ulster, Pa., Mike and Donna Spencer of Ulster, Pa.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene and Jack Bishop of Ulster, Pa., Marion and George Jefferson of Milan, Pa., Joyce Benjamin of Columbia Crossroads, Pa.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Carl and Terrisita Benninger of Orlando, Fla., Jack and Deb Benninger of Florida, Con and Betty Benninger of Canton, Pa., Harold Benninger of Bloomsburg, Pa., Dale and Mable Canfield of Wyalusing, Pa.; sisters-in-law, Dora Edwards of Candor, N.Y., Gail Clark of California; aunt, Hettie Johnson of Durell, Pa.; uncle, Wilbur Elliott of Liberty Corners, Pa.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Patrick R. Spencer in March of 1963, brother and sister-in-law Edward and Ann Spencer, mother-in-law and father-in-law Miner and Nancy Brewer Benninger, brothers-in-law Jerome Benjamin, Paul Edwards, William Benninger, Jim Clark, sisters-in-law Loretta Spencer, Nancy Rogers, Janice Covey and her daughter, Peggy Coolbaugh, aunts Helen, Marjorie, Nellie and John Titchen and Lucy and John Heath, and a nephew, Donald Bishop.

Abiding with Dick's request there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Interment will be in Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills, Pa. The family suggests that contributions may be directed to the , 57 North Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701, in Richard D. Spencer's memory. The Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home of Towanda, PA is assisting Dick's family with arrangements.
