Robert F. Bown, 89, a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, Pa., was called home to his Savior on Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Dar-Way Elder Care in Estella.

Born at the family home in Forksville on Nov. 16, 1924, Robert Francis was one of five children of the late Raymond and Thelma (McCarty) Bown. Upon graduating from Elkland Twp. Vocational School in 1942, Bob completed a machinist course in Williamsport before serving during WWII as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force. After returning to Sullivan County, he worked in the lumber business most of his life. In 1952, Bob went into a sawmill partnership with Harry Ketchum. Later he became the sole proprietor of the Bown Lumber Company and saw to the daily operations until 1974. In 1978, he was employed as a lumber buyer for Eastern Wood Products in Williamsport and retired in 1986.

Mr. Bown was an active and respected member of his community and Sullivan County.

He was a member of the Lincoln Falls Wesleyan Church for more then 70 years where he served as Lay Leader, Church Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent and Church Building Fund Treasurer throughout the years. He was a former director and lifetime member of the Sullivan County Historical Society and lifetime member of the Sullivan County Fair Association and past president. Bob also helped to organize and assisted with the Sullivan County Bow Hunter's Festival. He was a director of the former Sullivan County Telephone Co. and Dushore National Bank, an Elkland Twp. School Board Director and a member and former president of the Dushore Chamber of Commerce.

Family was very important in Bob's life. He will be remembered as a caring, devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He especially enjoyed sharing in family events and times spent hunting, fishing, woodworking and traveling. He also played the harmonica in the group, "The Music Makers" and made maple syrup for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Grace (Hunsberger) Bown; three children, Barry (Sharon) Bown of Piedmont, S.D., Roy Bown of Dalton, Pa. and Judith (Gary) Peterson of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; five grandchildren, Robert (Angie), Richard (Amanda), Michael, Mark and Kara; and five great-grandchildren; three siblings, Gene (Bernadine) Bown of Columbia Cross Roads, Pa., Joyce Homberg of Ashbury, N.J. and Patricia (John) Duncan of Denver, Colo.; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Doris Pardoe Bown in 1975; and a brother, Bruce Bown.

Calling hours are 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Lincoln Falls Wesleyan Church. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with his pastor, Rev. William Hargenrader officiating. Interment will be in the Elkland Friends Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, consider a memorial in Mr. Bown's name to the Lincoln Falls Wesleyan Church, c/o 6575 Route 87, Forksville, PA 18616.
