James Edward Walsh, 91, of Towanda, Pa. passed away peacefully at home early Sunday morning, May 4, 2014.

Jim, known to his friends as "Shanty", was born on Oct. 31, 1922, to Mary C. and James B. Walsh and is the last survivor of six children. His five siblings, Thomas, Robert and Mary Jane Walsh, Marjorie Schmeckenbecher, and Patricia Costello preceded him in death. He was also predeceased by his son John, who died in 2009.
Jim attended Saint Agnes School and graduated from Towanda High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps with service in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon discharge he returned to Towanda in 1946 and began work at the former W.T. Grant Store and Sylvania Electric in Towanda.
He married the former Marie E. McSparron on May 22, 1948 at the Epiphany Church in Sayre, Pa. In 1955 he was employed by the United States Postal Service as a rural route carrier until his retirement in 1982. His mail route patrons would always remark that they knew Jim was on his way with the mail when they heard whistling from his vehicle a mile down the road.
Jim was also a sales representative for Nationwide Insurance Company and established a business with his son James B. Walsh.
Jim was a member of the Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Towanda. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus and former president of the Saint Agnes P.T.G. He was also instrumental in raising funds to build the present Saint Agnes School built in 1962. Jim was also a member of the Towanda American Legion, a former member of the Towanda Borough Council and was a volunteer for the Towanda Ambulance Association.
He is survived by his wife, Marie; sons, Michael (Rozanne), James (Linda), and Joseph of Towanda, David (Grace) of Oakland, Calif.; and daughter, Mary Ann of El Paso, Texas. He was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Additionally he is survived by four sisters-in-law, Carol Wichtowski of Elmira, N.Y., Pauline McSparron of Sayre, Pa., Betty Walsh of Rochester, N.Y. and Mary McSparron of Tonawanda, N.Y.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Mass celebrating Jim's life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Third Street, Towanda. Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 will accord military honors at the church. Calling hours preceding the Mass will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa.
