Glenn H. Roberts, 88, of North Towanda, Pa., passed away early Thursday morning Aug. 7, 2014 at the Towanda Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

He was born in Milan, Pa., on April 11, 1926, and was a son of the late Glenn Fleming Roberts and Clara Elizabeth (Samson) Roberts of Milan, Pa.

Glenn was raised in Milan and attended Athens High School. He left in his senior year to join the Navy and did his boot camp in Samson, N.Y. After training he was sent to New York City where he boarded the Queen Mary, which was a troop ship at the time. He sailed to England where he was assigned to a ship (LST) that was in the D-Day invasion of France. He and his gun crew were cited for shooting down an enemy aircraft on that day.

Glenn had many friends and was an avid bowler, golfer, hunter and fisherman. He retired from Sylvania Electric Company (GTP) several years ago after 30 years of service. Glenn belonged to many clubs including the Beirne-Webster VFW Post No. 1568, Towanda, Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 and it's World War II Last Man's Club, Union Masonic Lodge No. 108 F. & A.M., Towanda, Towanda Elks Lodge No. 2191, and the Sylvania Men's Club. Glenn was a charter member of the North Towanda Volunteer Fire and Rescue Dept. and was a member of the Bradford County Fire Police Association and the Pennsylvania Fire Police Association. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Anna Mae (Simons) Roberts, on July 3, 2011. He is survived by a daughter Nancy, of Kirkwood, Pa.; brother Kenneth and wife Alona, also of Kirkwood, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, Aug. 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa. Union Masonic Lodge No. 108 F. & A.m. will hold a service of remembrance Sunday at 1:40 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will follow at 4 p.m. with the Reverend Jean Montgomery, pastor of the North Towanda United Methodist Church officiating. Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 will accord military honors at the funeral home. Afterwards there will be a light dinner at the North Towanda United Methodist Church. Burial for family members and close friends will be Monday, Aug. 11 at 9:30 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery, Towanda, Pa.
