Jimmy M. Schrimp, 68, of Rome Township, Pa. passed away Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. Jimmy was born March 12, 1946 in Cookeville, Putnam County, Tenn., the son of Eugene and Louise Barbara Stewart Schrimp. He was a graduate of Towanda High School class of 1964 and later served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper having attained the rank of Sergeant in E. Troop, 17th Cavalry, 173rd Airborne Brigade which overran a Viet Cong tax collecting point on Highway 20 during the Vietnam War. Jimmy was the recipient of the Parachute Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Following completion of his military service, Jimmy was employed as an explosives technician for the Blazely Construction Company on the Towanda Route 220 By-Pass Project and was later employed by the Lamp Phosphors Division at GTE Sylvania and subsequently Osram-Sylvania in Towanda for many years until his retirement.

Jimmy was a life member of Beirne-Webster VFW Post No. 1568, Towanda and was a member of Towanda American Legion Post No. 42. He also assisted in construction work on the early AM Vets Post in Asylum Township. Jimmy enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and helping family and friends.

Surviving are his children, Patricia (Cecil) Colegrove of Standing Stone, Janice Groover (Terry Vanderpool) of Towanda, Tanya (Orlando) Brown of Rome, Kristy Brown of Rome Twp.; grandchildren, James (Jessica) Brown of Rome, Justin (Abby) Brown of Muncy, Brett (Julie) Vanderpool of Wysox, Ronda Bouse of Waverly, Holly Bouse (Bill Johnson) of Wyalusing, T.J. Vanderpool (Brooks Shaw) of Wyalusing, DeeAnn (Jeff) Valentine of Louisiana, Art Everly Jr. of Towanda, Tanya Ball of Asylum Township, Tiffany Thomas of Standing Stone, Joseph (Beth) Thomas of Sayre; 19 great-grandchildren; brothers, Roy Schrimp and wife Lori of Towanda, Wayne Schrimp of Karnack, Texas; sisters, Barbara Park and husband Skip of Wysox, Regina Moon and husband Bill of Ontario, Calif., Brenda Hill of Flower Mound, Texas; several nieces, nephews and cousins; special nephew, David Park of Wysox; and special niece, Jessica Amato of Sayre.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved life time partner of 43 years whom he dearly missed, Geraldine M. Thomas on July 25, 2012; son, LaVerne H. Thomas Jr. on Dec. 28, 2012; brother, Phillip G. Schrimp on June 14, 1981; and sister, Cindy S. Foust on Aug. 3, 2008.

A joint memorial service for Jimmy M. Schrimp and Geraldine M. Thomas will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa.

Military honors will be accorded for Jimmy by Towanda American Legion Post No. 42.
