Raymond E. Johnson, 74, of Sayre, Pa., passed away Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, at home following an extended illness.

He was born April 17, 1936, in Sayre, Pa., the son of the late Mercur and Rheta Sollick.

Ray served in the Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1956. He was a machinist at Ingersoll-Rand for 42 years. Ray was a member of the Sayre VFW Skiff-Bower Post 1536, the American Legion and the Tioga Point hunting club. Ray was an avid reader and a loyal sports follower, especially football, baseball, high school and college wrestling and whatever his grandchildren were doing. Family would like to thank Mary Carroll, Kathryn Zurn, Ann Shay Cheatham along with Guthrie Hospice for their wonderful care this past year.

He was predeceased by: his father Mercur Johnson; mother Rheta West; grandson Chase Johnson; and a special friend, Pat Shay.

Ray is survived by: his children, Bobbi and Bill Furnas of Elmira, N.Y., Mike and Lina Johnson of Harleysville, Pa., Mark Johnson of Athens, Pa., Toni and Paul Abrahams of Ridgefield, Conn., and Steve and Mary Johnson of Silver Spring, Md.; grandchildren, Josh, Rachel, Justin (Jordan), Sean, Brooks, Alex, Maya, Talia and Gabriella; great-grandchild Kaylee; sisters and brother Donna and Jerry Robinson of Athens, Pa., Marlene Northrup of Waverly, N.Y., and Donald and Doris Johnson of Athens, Pa,; and aunts, Beatrice Johnson of Laceyville, Pa. and Madeleine Andrews of Williamstown, N.Y.

Family and friends may call from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010 at the Lowery Life Appreciation Center LLC., 225 S. Main St., Athens, Pa. The memorial service will follow at 6:30 p.m. with Rev. Ann Bey Canfield of the Waverly United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the French Azylum Cemetery.
