Kathryn Hartman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 26, 2015.
Kathryn Elizabeth "Kay" Brobst Hartman, 99, of 225 Poplar St., Towanda, Pa., passed away Sunday, May 24, 2015, at her home.

"Kay" as she was known by her family and friends was born on June 15, 1915, in Bloomsburg, Pa., the daughter of Harry E. and Ruth A. Aul Brobst. Kay was a graduate of Bloomsburg High School and a 1936 graduate of Bloomsburg State Teachers College where she received her Bachelor of Science degree. On July 31, 1943, she married Paul L. Hartman at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Bloomsburg. Mrs. Hartman taught elementary education for five years in Bethel Township, Berks County, Pa., and 24 years for the Towanda Area School District until her retirement in July of 1977.

She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Church Women, Vesper Guild, Alter Guild, Twentieth Century Club, Alpha Zeta Chapter of the Delta Zappa Gamma Society International, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, Bloomsburg Alumni Association and was a 70 year member of the Order of Eastern Star No. 76, Towanda. Kay enjoyed the arts, attending musical concerts and plays with friends, as well as offering her own artistic skills in creating crafts with the women's craft group at Trinity Lutheran Church. Kay also loved playing cards with two card clubs throughout her years in Towanda. A source of much enjoyment for Kay following her retirement was the opportunity to travel to several countries. Most important to Kay was sharing time and holiday celebrations with her family. When she was not enjoying the company of her family, her church family became her focus. Kay continued to serve the church in many capacities until the time of her passing.

Surviving are: her son, Richard P. Hartman of Sayre; daughter, Debra J. Hartman of Harrisburg; grandson, Mark R. Hartman and wife Lilly of Mass.; granddaughter, Molly J. Hartman of Sayre; sister-in-law, LaVerne Brobst of Tennessee; brother-in-law, Stuart "Bud" Hartman of Danville, Pa.; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a very close family friend, Johnna Seeton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Paul, on April 7, 1995; an infant son, Norman D. Hartman; sister, Jane A. Brobst and daughter-in-law, Susan Rockrohr Hartman.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2015, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Towanda, Pa., with Pastor Jira Albers officiating.

Interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Towanda, Pa. There are no calling hours. A luncheon for family and friends will be held at the church following the interment service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be directed to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 908 S. Main St., Towanda, PA 18848 or to Guthrie Hospice, 421 Tomahawk Road, Towanda, PA 18848, in Kathryn Elizabeth Hartman's memory. Dear Richard & Debby,
We are so sorry to hear about the loss of your mom! Your mom was a very special lady!! My first encounter with her was as my third grade teacher at Mulberry Street School. She was such a good example for me that I became a K, 1st grade teacher. She was also a wonderful friend to my mother-in-law, Echo Denniston. Craig & I really appreciate her loyal friendship to Echo. We also enjoyed her visit to our home in Missouri on one of her many travels with Echo. God will surely welcome another very special angel into his fold! With deepest sympathy, Nancy & Craig Denniston
