Old Lyme - Andrew L. "Andy" Montanaro Sr., 91, of Old Lyme and Highland Beach, Fla., loving husband of Virginia "Ginny" (Stocker) Montanaro for 69 wonderful years, passed away peacefully, Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, at home with his devoted family by his side.
He was born Dec. 21, 1921, in Hartford, and was the son of the late Luigi and Carmela (Maiorano) Montanaro. Formerly of Wethersfield, Andy owned and operated Cherrystones Restaurant, formerly known as 100 Acres Restaurant, on Shore Road in Old Lyme, for 40 years, having served thousands of patrons and friends. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving during World War II
as an instructional pilot.
Andy was a charter member of UNICO National, Hartford Chapter. He enjoyed golfing and was a former member of Wethersfield Country Club, Black Hall Golf Club in Old Lyme, and Boca Tica Golf Club in Boca Raton, Fla. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
He is survived by and was blessed with a beautiful and gracious wife, Ginny, for 69 years and also leaves behind his children, Patricia DiFazio and husband, Charles, Drew Montanaro and wife, Janice, Susan McCullough and husband, Fred, Jeffrey Montanaro and wife, Cornelia, Jeri Steele, Michael Montanaro and wife, Jane; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Patrick Montanaro, Nicholas Montanaro, and Louis Montanaro Jr.; and his sister, Angeline Franco.
A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Andy's life will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christ the King Church, One McCurdy Road, Old Lyme. The burial will be private at the convenience of the family, and there will not be any calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Andy's memory may be made to the Middlesex Hospice Palliative Care, 28 Crescent St., Middletown, CT 06457.
