Groton - Carolyn Foley of Groton, passed away in the comfort of her home on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on Jan. 19, 1932, in Potsdam, N.Y., the daughter of Arthur and Martha Williams. Carolyn lived most of her life in Mystic and attended St. Mary Top of Fort Hill Catholic Church. After the death of her husband, she moved to the City of Groton where she was a parishioner at Sacred Heart Church.
She retired from Electric Boat in 1995 from her job which she thoroughly enjoyed. She was a member of the Mystic VFW
Auxiliary and served as the organization's treasurer for over 40 years. In recent years, she spent a considerable amount of time volunteering at the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. She was an avid UConn women's basketball fan and the Connecticut Sun WNBA team, to which she held season's tickets for many years. Carolyn was a breast cancer
survivor for 8 years, during which time she enjoyed exercising daily by walking and swimming.
She is survived by her three children, Steven Durham and his wife, Sue, of Foxfire Village, N.C., Richard Durham and Juanita of Waterford and Marie Paige of Denver, Colo. She will also be sadly missed by her five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her brothers, Patrick Williams of Mystic, Robert Williams of Potsdam, N.Y., and Arthur Williams of Little River, S.C.; and her sister, Margaret Clary of Calabash, N.C.
She is predeceased her by husband, Richard Foley; a brother, Stanley Williams; and a sister, Alice Sherman.
Mystic Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
There are no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Groton. A private family burial will follow the church mass.
