Montville - Eugene Edward Parkos, 70, of 230 Connecticut Blvd., Oakdale, died Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Yale-New Haven Hospital .
He was born March 3, 1944, in Algoma, Wis., the son of Joseph and Myrtle (Amans) Parkos. He graduated from Algoma High School in 1962 and received an associate's degree from Florida Junior College in 1975.
Eugene served as a senior chief petty officer (SS) in the U.S. Navy
from 1962 through 1983 and is a veteran of Vietnam, Lebanon Peace Keeping Mission and the Invasion of Grenada. Following his military career, he retired from URS Corp. in Groton in 2010.
He married Charlene D. (Flynn) Parkos in Groton, at Shepherd of the Sea Chapel on Nov. 18, 1972.
He is a member of the Groton Lodge of Elks 2163 where he had served as a past treasurer, a trustee and a member of the dock committee, he also was a member of the U.S. Submarine Vets, Inc. He enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, golf, clamming and catching lobsters.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons; Bryan E. Parkos of Oakdale, Donald Berge of Uncasville and David Berge of Oakdale; one daughter, Elaine Berge of Norwich; two brothers, Dennis Parkos of Manitowac, Wis. and Joe Parkos and his wife, Thelma, of San Francisco, Calif.; three sisters, Jeanette Thomas, Diane Frenz and Sara Parkos, all of Two Rivers, Wisc.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was pre-deceased by a granddaughter, Danielle Nicholson.
Calling hours will be held 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. Private burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery in New London at a later date.
