East Lyme - Helen (Polnicky) "Polly" Atchison of Niantic, died on Sept. 10, 2008, at Bayview Healthcare in Waterford.
She was born on Dec. 6, 1921, in Red Cloud, Neb., the daughter of Paul and Hazel (Overleese) Polnicky. She moved with her family to Cheyenne, Wyo., during her high school years. She attended the University of Wyoming until deciding to work as a customer service agent for United Airlines during World War II.
Polly met and married William Brewster Atchison during her time with the airline and moved to New York City. Polly and her husband eventually moved to Williamstown, Mass., and then to Avon to raise their children.
She was predeceased by her husband and her daughter, Heather A. Meadows.
Polly was a dedicated member of the recreation department in Avon and during that time helped secure the town's purchase of Sycamore Swim Club and Countryside Park. Polly worked as an MLS real estate agent for Heritage and finally the Westledge office in Avon. She moved to Wyoming to be closer to her children and worked as a house mother at the university for the Pi Beta Phi sorority until retiring.
She was known for her wonderful smile and friendly, caring manner by all her friends and family. She loved cross-country skiing, walking, and looking for wildflowers.
Mrs. Atchison is survived by her daughter, Holly A. Magna of Niantic; her son, Ronald B. Atchison of Arvada, Colo.; and her grandchildren, Sam and Emma Magna and Matthew, Kelleen, and Parker Atchison.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Sept. 18, at Avon Congregational Church, Main Street, Avon.
