Falmouth, Mass. - Jack Barca, 84, formerly of New London, died on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at Falmouth Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born, raised and educated in New London, he graduated from New London High School and attended Thames Valley State Technical College.
Jack served in the U.S. Navy
, and as a civilian, retired as director of public works at the U.S. Naval Underwater Systems Center in New London. He was also an electrical contractor. Upon his retirement, he sold real estate and owned a real estate business in Melbourne, Fla.
He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed archery, golf, and tennis. Jack organized several charity golf tournaments and his passion was raising funds to benefit special needs children. He also was active in charity work as a lifelong member of the New London Lodge of Elks and as a member of the Sons of Italy.
Jack also enjoyed spending time with family and friends at Ocean Beach Park in New London. He was an accomplished jitterbug dancer and a self-taught bass musician.
He is predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Sherrie (DeSantis) Barca.
He is survived by a daughter, Lori Oberlander, and her husband, David, of Falmouth, Mass.; a son, Mark Barca, and his wife, Holly, of Canton; a sister, Donna Dinovelli of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Anthony Dinovelli, of Fort Myers, Fla.; sister-in-laws, Valerie Hunter of Poulsboro, Wash., and Janet Barca of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a grandson, Andrew Oberlander of Falmouth, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation hour will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Jan. 22, 2013, at Chapman, Cole, and Gleason, in Falmouth, and a funeral mass at 11:30 a.m, at St. Patrick's Church, Falmouth. A reception will follow in the parish hall. A military burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Mass.
