Charlestown, R.I. - Jerry I. Duhamel Sr., 80, Post Road, Charlestown, died on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at his home.
Born in Pawtucket, R.I., he was the son of the late Edward C. and Harriet (Barnes) Duhamel. He established the well-known Hitching Post Restaurant in 1950 on Post Road, in Charlestown.
Jerry was an active member of many Masonic organizations throughout his long life; he was past master of the Franklin Lodge #20 in Westerly, Scottish Rites and York Rite of Masons, Shriners and the Royal Order of the Jesters. Mr. Duhamel was a member of the First Baptist Church of Charlestown at Quonochontaug. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean War
Jerry will be sadly missed by his two children, Jerry I. Duhamel Jr. and Tammy L. McLellan, both of Charlestown. He was the loving grandfather of Jerry I. Duhamel III of Mansfield, Mass., Tabitha Berard of Winter Garden, Fla. and Tiffany McLellan of Charlestown. He also leaves his former wife, Helen Downs of Lakeside, Calif.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert, Kenneth, and Clifford "Kip" Duhamel and his twin brother, Carlin Duhamel.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, at the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home with a calling hour preceding the service from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be private.
