Lyme - Julia Jeanne (Hutchinson) Smith, 82, a resident of Lyme for 45 years, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, surrounded by her loving family at The Village of South Farms in Middletown.
She was the daughter of the late Henry and Geraldine (Wilson) Hutchinson and the wife of Norman J. Smith, who passed away in 1990.
Julia excelled at all things "people". She was a loving mother who raised her five children and a menagerie of pets. Involved in the community, she was one of the crafters of the Lyme Compact which helped bring affordable housing to Lyme.
The town's tax collector for many years, she prepared its award-winning annual reports. A founder of the Lyme Ambulance Association, she obtained her certification as an EMT, and later became a fire police person. She was also chosen to be a lay member of the State of Connecticut's Critical Incident Stress Management Team (CISD).
Equally passionate about her faith and music, Julia was a member of the First Congregational Church of Lyme, the church choir, and of Southeastern Connecticut's Capella Cantorum, with whom she toured to Europe and England.
She is survived by two sons, Norman J. Smith Jr. of Granby and Robert J. Smith and his wife, Maureen, of Pawcatuck; three daughters, Katherine Ernst (her husband, the late Alvin Ernst) of Block Island, R.I., Jan M. Smith of Lansdale, Pa., and Jill A. Federico and her husband, John, of South Hero, Vt.; seven grandchildren, Laura, Kevin, Matthew, Meghan, Isabelle, Nathan, Paul; and three great-grandchildren, Curtis, Chelsea, and Noble. She will be sorely missed.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the First Congregational Church of Lyme, One Sterling Road, Lyme, with Rev. Carolyn Johns officiating. The family invites Julia's friends to join them at a reception celebrating her life immediately following the service, at the Lyme Public Hall.
In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations in Julia's memory to the
of Connecticut, 2075 Silas Deane Highway, Suite 100, Rocky Hill, CT 06067 or the Lyme Ambulance Association, 480 Hamburg Road, Lyme, CT 06371.
