Katrina "Trina" Weschler

Mystic - Katrina "Trina" (Quinn) Weschler died peacefully at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013.

Born Mary Catherine Quinn, Trina was one of seven children of Francis Bernard and Mary (Harrington) Quinn. She was born April 7, 1923, and grew up in Erie, Pa., where she graduated from Mercyhurst Prep. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. She then joined the Cadet Nursing Program and received a master of science degree in nursing from Yale University.

The most important aspects of her life, Katrina would tell you, were her husband and family. Katrina married Lt. Commander Thomas Robert Weschler, and they had a relationship that lasted for 66 years. She joked that they spent their honeymoon in Buffalo (Buffalo!), because she had to get back to New Haven to study for her finals.

She has two children, Katherine Weschler Williams and Thomas Richard Weschler, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a large and close family of more than 25 nieces and nephews. Ask her family why she was so special, and each says she was the kind of person who made you feel you were the only one in the room.

Katrina's husband Tom had a distinguished naval career, and she was a dedicated and supportive wife and mother committed to her family, the Navy, and her community. Tom has always described Katrina as the "wind beneath his wings."

Among her many roles, in addition to being a great mom, was leadership of Navy Wives, a large and prominent organization in Washington, D.C. Trina developed the first Navy Wives Cookbook and was honored to meet Lady Bird Johnson, who she revered, as part of the experience. Other volunteer activities included Grey Ladies, Garden Club, horticultural therapy, officer in the English-speaking union, Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, Meals on Wheels driver, and many other event and organization leadership roles. She returned to nursing after her children were grown, first gaining recertification and then becoming a head nurse at Georgetown Hospital.

Katrina and Tom have many friends all over the world, and Katrina was very conscientious about staying in touch with them over the years. She and Tom loved to travel, and one of their favorite experiences was a yearlong trip to Europe to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. When they returned from their journey, they gave inspirational, practical, and funny talks about their adventures.

Katrina and Tom lived in many cities over the course of his naval career. After his retirement, they settled in Newport, R.I., a city they loved and lived in for almost 40 years. In 2008, they moved to Mystic, and quickly became deeply connected to their new home and community at StoneRidge. The family wishes to thank all who made Katrina's last days comfortable.

There will be a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at St. Patrick's Church, 32 East Main St., Mystic. The service will be followed by a reception from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at StoneRidge, 186 Jerry Browne Road, Mystic.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Katrina Quinn Weschler Scholarship Fund at Mercyhurst Prep, 538 East Grandview Boulevard, Erie, PA 16504.
