Len Turpin

Uncasville - Len Warren Turpin, 61, of 44 Dubois Road, Uncasville, passed away April 26, 2007.

He was born in Los Angeles, Calif., on March 26, 1946. He graduated from Marina High School in Southern California in 1964.

Mr. Turpin served in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1970 during the Vietnam Era. Len attended Thames Valley Technical College from 1984 to 1987 in Norwich, majoring in electrical engineering, drafting and design.

He married Catherine Dunn on Jan. 4, 1969 at St. Joseph Church in New London. Catherine Dunn Turpin survives him.

Len worked at General Dynamics Electric Boat from 1970 to 1993, at this time he retired on retired disability. Due to his physical limitations from his injuries he had to live with during his life he enjoyed computer networking with many people in the United States and all over the world. The most memorable conversation he had on the computer was with the famous Rosa Parks and he had more than a decade of friendship with a couple from Arkansas. He loved reading, Discovery Channel, feeding birds, building bird houses, and spending time with his family and friends. Everywhere he went he had a joke or story to tell to make people laugh and he had the tee-shirt and ball cap to go with it. He loved to volunteer at Christmas season filling his truck with gifts for the children at Waterford Country School.

He was born to Warren Turpin and Lola Boydstun Turpin who predeceased him.

Surviving him besides his wife Catherine of Uncasville, are his sister Roz Honea, his brother, Terry Turpin, and brothers, Les and Ted Turpin, all of California. Also surviving him are his daughter, Loree Phillips, of Agawam, Mass., son, Len W. Turpin Jr., of Norwich, and daughter, Cindy, and son-in-law, Chris Jordan, of Waterford. He leaves behind four grandchildren, Meagan Rebecca Phillips, Andrew William Phillips, Anthony Leelander Jordan, and a brand new addition of his grandchildren born April 27, 2007, the day after his death, Ryan Len Phillips. Locally he leaves a brother-in-law, Joseph Leonard Dunn, and Joseph's wife, Jodie McShane Dunn, Len's sister-in-law of Bozrah. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins and many loving memories. His nick name was "Uncle Louie."

The funeral will assemble at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Church at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
