Louis John Ernst

Waterford - Louis John Ernst of Waterford, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2014, in Coconut Creek, Fla.

Mr. Ernst was born in Bronx, N.Y., on April 17, 1927, but was raised and lived on Daniels Avenue in Waterford. He joined the U.S. Navy right after graduating from the former Bulkeley School in New London in 1944.

After the war, he attended New York Aviation Academy. Lou showed his passion for baseball by managing the Niantic American Legion team for 50 years. His love and dedication carried over to the positive impact Lou had on the many young men he coached over the years.

He worked at his awning company in Niantic during the summer months, and he worked at the horse tracks in Florida in the winter months where he spent his retiring years.

He is survived by his wife, Athena Poulios from New London. His son, William Louis lives in the home where Lou lived for most of his life in Waterford. His daughter, Caroline Marie resides in Coconut Creek, Fla., with her husband, Steve, and their 11 year old twins, Amber Nicole and Zachary John.

His son, Edward John passed away in 2009.

Services were private and at the convenience of the family.
