Preston - Michael T. Allen passed away on May 11 at his home in Preston.
Mike was born on Feb. 21, 1937, the son of Lawrence and Cora Allen of Groton, both of whom are deceased. He was a graduate of Fitch High School and completed two years of college during his service in the Air Force from 1955 to 1958.
Mike married Carol Edwards of Alma, Ark., on Dec. 24, 1979.
Mike worked in the areas of undercover security and real estate appraisal before becoming deputy tax assessor for the Town of Windham from 1989 to 1999.
Mike was dedicated to community service and was active with the Town of Windham Veterans Council, the County of Windham Veterans Council, the Moose Lodge of Willimantic, the Maennerchor Club of Taftville, American Legion Post No. 19 in Windham, and Amvets Post No. 47 in Moosup. In addition, Mike was a member of the Elks Willimantic Lodge No. 1311 where he served as Exalted Ruler from 1999 to 2000.
In addition to his wife Carol, Mike is survived by his children, Richard Allen and his wife, Linda, of Norwich, Peter Swinglehurst, of Norwich and Nikki Allen, of Gales Ferry. Mike also leaves six grandchildren, Ashley and Eric Allen, Ian and Jesse Crandall, and Hannah and Tanner Arnold. He leaves a brother, Clark Allen and his wife, Susan, of Glastonbury and a sister, Janet Downs, of Groton.
Mike was predeceased by a sister, Constance Pflomm, of Niantic.
Mike will be remembered as a man who loved his home, his community and his country.
A memorial service will be held on Friday May 16 at 11 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 15 Route 165, Preston. Lunch will follow the service.
Donations in Mike's memory may be made to the veterans' organization of the donor's choice.
