Old Lyme - Sheila (O'Sullivan) Appleby, of Old Lyme, passed away on Dec. 21, 2013, at New London Rehab in Waterford.
She was born on May 4, 1930, in Kenmare, County Kerry, Ireland, the daughter of Patrick and Mary O'Sullivan. Sheila came to the United States in 1950.
She settled in Old Lyme in 1951 and married John H. Appleby Jr. on Oct. 29, 1955. Mr. Appleby passed away on March 29, 2003.
For many years, she was employed in the hotel management field. Her last position was the owner and operator of the Appletree Restaurant in Essex.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary Naehring of Old Lyme and Jacqueline and her husband, Gordon Young, of Oak Hill, Va.; her sons, William and his wife, Caren Appleby, of Clinton, Michael Appleby of Old Lyme, and Charles and his wife, Jacqueline Appleby, of Old Saybrook; her grandchildren, John and Kim Naehring, Charles Jr., Thomas, Brendan, and Tyler Appleby, Caroline and Cooper Young.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her siblings, Donald, Murty, Eileen, and Sr. Mary O'Sullivan, Bridget Long, and Elizabeth Kiernan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, in Christ The King Church, McCurdy Road, Old Lyme. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26, at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Beckwith Lane, Old Lyme.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her memory may be made to Old Lyme Ambulance Association, Visiting Nurses of the Lower Valley, or St. Bernard School Endowment Fund.
