Voluntown - Walter Jabs Sr., 89, of Voluntown, husband of Margaretha J. (Judd) Jabs, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at home.
Mr. Jabs was born June 14, 1924, in Terryville, and was a son of the late Ludwig and Augusta (Witzke) Jabs. He was a U.S. Army
veteran of World War II
, having served in Africa, Italy, and Austria with the 85th and 88th divisions.
He served as president and presided over the reunion of the 85th division. Walter enjoyed building and repairing clocks, woodworking, and building stone walls. He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, Norwich, the Voluntown Historical Society, and was a life member of both the Legion and the VFW
Mr. Jabs is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Walter Jabs Jr. and his former wife, Virginia Thulen, of Vermont, and Grayle T. and Lucille Jabs of Preston; a daughter, Heidi Jabs of Marlborough; seven grandchildren, Erin and Tracey Jabs, Sarah, Alison, and Kurt Wenzel, Leah Jabs, and Ericka Webber; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Paul Jabs; and three sisters, Alvina Laser, Frieda Hansen, and Lydia Jabs.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at the Barnes Memorial Chapel, 49 Pound St., Bristol. Burial with military honors will follow in West Cemetery, Bristol. Relatives and friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service Monday, at the Barnes Memorial Chapel.
