Charles Stone Obituary

Old Saybrook - Charles B. Stone died at home with his family in attendance, from complications of Alzheimer's/Parkinson's syndrome on July 17, 2010.

Charlie was born in Waterbury, on April 18, 1937, son of Wilbur and Gertrude (Jaffe) Stone, brother of Bill.

He and his wife, Ellen Monroe Stone, married on Feb. 14, 1959, and had four children and six grandchildren, Charles Jr. "Ben" and his wife, Karen, and children, Alexandria and Katharine of Niantic, Elizabeth "Betsy" Stone Mazzoleni and her husband, Ray, and children, Lee and Lauren of Salem, N.H., Jeff and his wife, Janet, and children, Rachel and Nicole of Londonderry, N.H., and daughter, Jen Stone of Norwich.

The family moved from Wolcott to Old Saybrook in 1967, where Charlie soon became interested in politics. He served on the Republican Town Committee. He also served the town as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals, The Planning Commission, and the Board of Finance, and was elected chairman on each of these boards. In addition, he was a participant of the Middle School Building Commission and other subcommittees of the RTC. Charlie refereed and coached in many of the youth programs in town and was an active member of the Jaycees and Ram Boosters. He was also a life member of the Westbrook BPOE.

Charlie, a mechanical engineer, retired after 25 years from Emerson Electric-Motor Division of St. Louis, Mo., after working as a sales engineer. He was a thinker and tinkerer. He could rebuild an engine or design and build a shed. He liked fixing or repurposing things and solving problems, as well as tutoring math when asked. Charlie was a good Samaritan, a fair man and gentleman, and he could make you laugh out loud with his one-liners that he seemed able to pull out of the air. Comedy and music, plays and travels, and his home and family were all his joys. Charlie will be missed by all who knew him and those that loved him. During his illness, family, friends, and neighbors assisted in Charlie's care which enabled his spouse to keep him in his home.

Friends may visit the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 30, 2010, at Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook. Internment and graveside services will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a charitable contribution may be made to the Middlesex Hospital Hospice Home Care, 28 Crescent St., Middletown CT 06457.

Betsy...(& family), I've been thinking about how to express my sadness about your dad's passing. It sounds like he was a man devoted to his family & community...a credit to his generation. He was blessed with a loving family and taken way too soon. Your photos and bio of his life demonstrate many cherished moments & memories. Hold them dear and remember him as the vibrant man he was before this terrible illness took him from you. My deepest condolences on your loss.

I am thinking of you all during this sad time for your family. I will always remember the twinkle in Mr. Stone's eye and the wicked grin which always followed one of his wise cracks. Makes me smile just thinking of it now!

Ellen, Pam and I were very saddened to hear about Charlie's passing. He was such an easy going and friendly man. It was good to be able to discuss politics with someone that knew what he was talking about. We enjoyed the times that we were able to get together with you and your family in past years.
