Robert Evans Obituary

Stonington - Robert Raymond Evans, 80, of Stonington, and formerly of Monson, Mass., passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018.

He is survived by his son, Todd Evans and daughter-in-law, Lourdes, of Haddam; his daughter, Sue (Evans) DeBruin and son-in-law, Chris, of Brimfield, Mass.; and his son, Dan Evans and daughter-in-law, Ailla, of Brooklyn. He leaves his beloved grandchildren, Ava, Jack, Sara, Sam, John, and Oliver; and his former wife and lifelong friend, Christine Evans of Monson, Mass. He also leaves his longtime partner, Roxanne Jeffcoat of Stonington. He is survived by his sister, Carol and brother-in-law, Don McDaniel, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and his brother, Tom Evans of Cooperstown, N.Y.; as well as his nieces and nephews and their families.

He is predeceased by his brother, Don Evans of Hartford.

Robert, or "Bob" as he was better known, was born on Oct. 17, 1937, in Pittsfield, Mass., and was the first child of Edmund and Helen (Spence) Evans. In his early years, he attended the Morewood School, a one room school house in Pittsfield, and in 1955 he graduated from Pittsfield High School. Bob chose to attend Bates College in Maine before transferring to Iowa State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in agronomy and graduated in 1960. He began his career as a systems analyst for Mass Mutual in Springfield, Mass., where he met and married Christine (Lamoy) Evans. They moved to a cottage at Paradise Lake in Monson, Mass. in 1969 to raise a family where they remained together for the next 30 years. During that time, Bob commuted to Hartford to pursue and build his career as an investments analyst and portfolio manager. Bob was fortunate enough to achieve longtime success doing EXACTLY what he loved despite a long commute, while keeping his family in their idyllic neighborhood at the lake.

Bob moved to Stonington in 2000 to a small farmhouse where he enjoyed working on his property with his tractors. He loved his land and being a farmer at heart, found such pleasure being surrounded by neighbors with similar interests. Bob retired as a senior vice president and portfolio manager at Fleet Bank in 2002 and was then able to enjoy his home and community to the fullest. He was drawn by the Long Island Sound, sailing, fishing and enjoying the water with his family and friends. Here in Stonington, he gained the companionship of his neighbor Roxanne Jeffcoat, who became a cherished longtime partner and brought him so much joy in his later years.

Bob remained connected to his communities throughout his working and retirement years. He volunteered his time in investment management for the Girl Scouts organization of Western Massachusetts. He also served as a member of the board of directors for Eagle Camp, which was a special place for him on the shores of Lake Champlain. He spent time there every summer of his childhood with his family, enjoying fishing, watching sunsets and playing tennis. These were traditions he continued with his own children and grandchildren as long as he was able.

Bob was an active and passionately dedicated member of his church, the United Church of Stonington located in Stonington Borough, where he was deeply loved by his congregation. A memorial service will be held there at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Evans' name can be received by The United Church of Stonington.

I have fond memories of Bob sailing, mowing the lawn (while Todd helped -pushing his bubble mower), gardening, and playing tennis at "the lake". Thanks for helping to fine tune my game. May God bless you.
