Alice Mullenn Obituary

Ledyard - Alice Lorene Mullen, 87, of Lake St., Ledyard, formerly of Brooklyn, N.Y. and widow of George V. Mullen, died Saturday, May 4, 2013, at home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on Feb. 6, 1926, in Reeder, N.D., the daughter of John and Olive (Hays) Tweet. Sharing a two room sod house with a family of 11, she aspired to be a teacher. After graduating from Reeder High School, Alice traveled to the State of Washington to work in the shipyards as a "Rosie the Riveter" during World War II. She also worked at the business office of the Brooklyn Development Center, Rehabilitation Center for Retarded Persons until retiring in 1992 after 25 years.

She is a life member and past president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Post 107 in Brooklyn, N.Y. She had been recognized by former Mayor Rudy Giuliani for her 25 years of volunteerism to The Brooklyn Development Center, and the NYPD 61st Precinct Youth Dare program. She was also an active member of the Brooklyn Democratic Party until due to health reasons, she relocated to Connecticut to live with her daughter and son-in-law.

Alice loved to write poetry, especially about America. She loved to sing and listen to country music and loved doing crossword puzzles while eating her favorite foods, Chunky's and peanut M&M's.

She is survived by her daughters, Marjorie Proctor and her husband, John, of Connecticut, Alice Grobarcik and her husband, Richie, of Colorado, Georgina Easterbrook and her husband, Walter, of New Jersey, Kathleen Kelly-Volpe of New Jersey; and a son, Ronald Mullen of Florida; brothers, Marvin Tweet of Montana, and Dean Tweet of Oregon; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Oren; and sisters, Ruth, Dolores, Irene and Dorothy.

Calling hours will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton. A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, at the Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, L.I., N.Y., where she will be buried with her late husband.
