Sumter, S.C. - Anne Amelia (Daugherty) Shaw, 88, former wife of Day publisher Barnard L. Colby, died on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Covenant Place in Sumter, S.C.
Anne and Barnard L. Colby were married Nov. 1980 until his death in 1993. They attended St. James Episcopal Church in New London. She was born in Punta Gorda, Fla. on Jan. 6, 1925, a daughter of Carl Andrew and Annie (Banks) Daugherty. She graduated from Ponce De Leon High School in Coral Gables and attended Coker College in Hartsville, SC. While in Florida, she resided in Melbourne, Orlando, and Coral Gables, but lived most of her life in Summerton, S.C.
Mrs. Shaw was a former member of the Coral Gables Junior Welfare League, a longterm member of St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Summerton, and a past president of the Florence District of the Episcopal Church Women. She was active in many community affairs and events including the Harvin Library in Manning, S.C., the Clarendon County Historical Society, and the Clarendon County Bass Festival.
An avid sketcher and painter, Mrs. Shaw was known for her talent as an artist in a variety of mediums. She drew illustrations for the Clarendon County Bass Festival, all of the drawings for the popular Santee Supper cookbook, as well as artwork in Clarendon Cameos, a Clarendon County commemorative book. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, crocheting, smocking, and needlepoint. A lover of travel, she visited many places in the U.S. and abroad.
She is survived by a daughter, Jessica Markley Lee (Joe) of Sumter; and two sons, William David McClary VI of Summerton, and Carl Reader McClary of Atlanta; a grandson, Joel Frank Thompson (Karen); four granddaughters, Amelia Thompson Main (Chris), Margaret Anne Lee, Caroline Lee Barnette (Will), and Katherine Allen McClary; as well as two great-granddaughters, Markley Joy Main and Jane Frances Thompson.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Pierce Markley, William David McClary V, Barnard Ledward Colby, and Eugene Aiken Shaw; sisters, Margaret Daugherty Martin, Carolyn Daugherty Cannon; and her daughter, Maureen Markely Bense.

A Memorial Service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 21, 2013, at St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Summerton with the Rev. Dan Clarke officiating. Interment followed in the Evergreen Cemetery in Summerton.
