Caroline Cooper Obituary

Groton - Caroline (Houck) Cooper, 88, of Groton, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

She was born in Columbus, Ohio, on Nov. 5, 1924, the daughter of the late Lewis and Mary Houck. Mrs. Cooper graduated with honors from St. Genevieve of the Pines Academy in Asheville, N.C. She attended Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. and graduated from Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

Caroline worked as a volunteer at St. Andrews Day Care in Groton for 16 years. She was a former member of the Mystic Seaport and the Bishop Seabury Church, and Friends and Neighbors Square Dance Club. Mrs. Cooper enjoyed the beach, swimming, boating, reading, classical music, figure skating, gardening, bird-watching, and was an avid sports fan, especially of professional football and thoroughbred horse racing.

Her survivors include a daughter, Mary H. Vail of Gaithersburg, Md.; three sons, Charles H. Cooper of Naperville, Ill., Allan H. Cooper of Fredericksburg, Va., and Christopher Clark Cooper of New London; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton. Her burial will follow in the Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic. There will be a visiting hour from 11 to 12 p.m. prior to her service.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be directed to the charity of the donors choice.
