Daniel Campbell Obituary

Mystic - Daniel J. Campbell, Ed.D, STSC(SS), 54, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, June 8, 2013, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. After a brief struggle with cancer, and final goodbyes to his family and best friend, Jim, he started his final voyage.

He was born on July 19, 1958, in Newport News, Va., to Rev. Milton L. and Dorothy Campbell, the youngest and only son of four children. His parents and sister, Cynthia predeceased him.

Dan is survived by his wife, Angie Campbell of Mystic; daughter, Gwen Campbell of Key West, Fla.; son, Tim Campbell of College Station, Texas; sisters, Deborah Campbell of Massachusetts and Dawn Thomas and her husband, Edward, of Ohio; also 12 nieces and nephews.

Dan's passions in life were the Submarine Service (where he retired as a senior chief); education (where he earned his doctorate); kids (where he was a scout master); cats and his roses. He was a good man; kind, determined, professional and caring. He will be greatly missed by all knew him.

In keeping with his wishes, there will not be a service; he will be cremated and buried at sea.

However, for anyone wishing to honor his memory, please consider a contribution to either of the scholarship funds listed. This will make him smile.

I had the good fortune of working with Dan for a number of years at Vangent. We would share sea stories from time to time and I could see the pride in him for his service to our country. Dan was a man of integrity, respect and good humor and his professionalism and work ethic was second to none. My sincere condolences to his loving family and close friend Jim. Fair winds and following seas Dan...we were all graced by your presence and you will be missed.

I also served with Dan on the USS Puffer. He was a member of that family and will be missed by all who knew him. He defended his country in ways that many will never know. I am proud to have served with him and for having known him. I know he is in Heaven with more than a few good CPOs telling very large sea stories! Rest Your Oar Dan.

I knew Dan when we attended Sonar school in the Navy. He was talented, smart, funny and a great cook. I'm glad to have known him and mourn his untimely passing.

While I did not have the honor of serving with Dan, he is not only a navy and submarine brother, but a fellow Senior Chief and Sonarman. Thank you for your service to your country shipmate, and now sailor you have the eternal fair winds and following seas you have richly earned. We send our condolences to his wife Angie, and all of his family and friends.

Dan was a shipmate on the USS Puffer in the early 80s and he and Angie were friends to my wife and I away from the boat as well. Dan was an honorable man and a good sailor. He didn't get in much trouble in foreign ports and if he did I'd never utter a word about it. Fair winds and following seas my brother.

My deepest sympathy to all of Dan's family and friends. Dan was a great shipmate and will be missed. He is now on the eternal patrol that all of us will join him on in the coming years.
