Delbert Robertson Obituary

Groton - Delbert R. Robertson, 82, a man devoted to family, nuclear technology, and our country, passed away peacefully in his Groton home on Aug. 5, 2013.

Robertson's life reflects a richly inquisitive and dynamic mind. Born in Troupe, Texas, on Feb. 27, 1931, to Vinnie and Gladys (Dunlap) Robertson, third of six children, he left his hometown to join the U.S. Navy.

A 21-year veteran dedicated to serving our country, Robertson retired as EMCM (SS) E-9 (master chief) in 1970. Always seeking new challenges and ways to contribute his gifts to others, Robertson retired from the Navy and joined General Dynamics where he was an instructor. He then went on to Millstone Power Station as an operations coordinator, a position he excelled at for over a decade before retiring.

Robertson married his beloved wife, Margaret (Piechowski), on Christmas Eve in 1951. They were married more than 61 years. Together, they built a life grounded in family, integrity, trust and love, raising six children.

Robertson was widely respected as a natural teacher and leader. His volunteer and civic contributions reflect his generous heart. He was a longtime volunteer of the Center Groton Fire Department and member of the Elks Club. An avid baseball fan, he coached his three sons and their teammates-spanning more than a decade-in Groton's Little League program.

When not contributing his professional and personal talents to others, Robertson took time out to do what brought him joy, golf, and bowling. His delight in and success with bowling was only exceeded by his love of golf. His excursions on the links took him to courses throughout the continental U.S. as well as Hawaii, Japan, and Ireland. He was an excellent golfer, but friends say he was an even better instructor of the game, helping many master their craft.

Although motivated in his professional career and civic duties, Robertson's dedication to his family was unwavering. He never missed a single milestone event for his children or grandchildren, which is rather extraordinary given the size of his family. Family and friends will dearly miss him.

Delbert Robertson is survived by his wife, Margaret; his daughter, Deborah Maxson of Groton; his son, Delbert Ray Robertson Jr. of Mystic; his daughters, Donna Speaks of Groton and Cheryl Smith of Chocowinity, N.C.; his sons, Kevin Robertson of Norwalk and Alan Robertson of Old Lyme; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind three brothers, William Robertson of Montana, Dale and Dean Robertson, both of Texas.

Robertson was predeceased by his sister, MaryDee and brother, Gerald, also both of Texas.

A private service celebrating the joyful life of Delbert Ray Robertson will be held for family members.

To the family of Del,
I worked with Del for many of those years at Millstone. I never realized all the extracurricular activities he had, but it showed up is his attitude at work. Dale was very liked by all he came in contact with. He will be missed. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
