Edward Lusher Obituary

Waterford - Edward A. Lusher Sr., of 42 Gallup Lane, Waterford, passed away at Lawrence + Memorial hospital on Thursday, June 20, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on Dec. 27, 1931, in Moline, Ohio, son of the late Alvin Arthur and Francis (Glenn) Lusher. In 1952, he graduated from Olney High School in Walbridge, Ohio. He joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1952 to 1956 as a first class cook stationed in New London on the PCR850 docked at the Naval Underwater Sound Lab.

Ed Lusher was known by all his family and friends to be a hard working man and a fine craftsman, in addition to being a local restaurant owner for 56 years. He was married in 1954 to Lorraine Beatrice in New London. Together they ran L&B Foodservice in the "breezeway" at Ocean Beach Park from 1956 until 1973 where he gained notoriety as "the clam fritter man."

He completed the carpenter apprentice program at Electric Boat in 1956 and worked concurrently to the restaurant business as a "finish trim carpenter and cabinetmaker" for 50 years. He worked for 12 years on Millstone Units 1, 2, and 3 with Bec-Tel Construction, Ebasco, and Stone & Webster Construction. After leaving Ocean Beach in 1973, Ed and his family opened Ed's Open Kitchen & Frosty Cream on Route 32 in Uncasville changing the name to Eds' Kitchen & Creamery, Inc. along with a major expansion in 1984.

In Sept. of 1999, Ed acquired a 1931 Chevrolet with a convertible top and a rumble seat and surprised most of his family by taking a little time to enjoy it. He joined the Yesteryear of Oakdale car club and reduced his work schedule to half a day (12 Hours). In Oct. of 2008, at age 76, he retired from daily duties at Eds' Kitchen and has since been a fixture at most of the areas classic car events.

He is survived by his wife Lorraine; son Edward Jr., daughter-in-law Marilyn; two granddaughters and their husbands, Michelle and Nicholas Condon and Susan and Andrew Macione, all of Waterford; and his sister, Donna Marsh of Walbridge, Ohio.

He was predeceased by his brothers, David and Robert of Walbridge, Ohio; and his sister, Wavalee of Perrysburg, Ohio.

He passed knowing he was going to be a great-grandfather, proudly wearing his Father's Day shirt exclaiming that fact all day before entering the hospital.

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. The funeral will assemble at 9:15 a.m. Monday, at the funeral home and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial scheduled for 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.

Condolence messages may be left on Ed's memorial page at www.neilanfuneralhome.com

The family would like to extend a heartfelt THANKS to the doctors, nurses and staff of Lawrence + Memorial Hospital who provided him compassionate attention for the last seven years. Ed's Kitchen was my second job while still in high school back in 82. Ed had a great personality and always made me laugh. He was just that special kind of guy who was a friend to all. I always enjoyed being at work while he was around. He made everything fun. May he rest in peace knowing how much he was loved.

Ed Jr...you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. The last time I saw your dad was at my house garage sale. Looking through all my dad's old tools. It was nice to see him, and chat about old times at Ocean Beach. I also recall many times seeing him at the restaurant in Uncasville. Keep the faith. We all will meet again some day. Dearest Friends,

Tears, prayers, fond memories and Praise to God for the gift of eternal life He offers everyone of us! God the ultimate Carpenter must have greeted Ed with open arms, as He shared the news about His plan for complete renewal in Christ our Savior. I am thankful for the blessings of Ed Senior in my life, and knowing he was baptized this past Easter into Faith, consoles my heart. Gary and I will miss him dearly along side all his family and friends. He left behind so many beautiful creations, not only in the things he made with his hands yet more importantly the family Lorraine and Ed built through the Grace of God!

Love you all sincerely,
Lisa and Gary Silva
