Elizabeth Avery Obituary

Plainfield - Elizabeth "Betty" Avery, 84, died peacefully on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013.

Betty was born in June of 1929 in Preston, the daughter of the late Richard W. and Anna (Schultz) Allyn Sr. She attended Norwich Free Academy. She married the late Walter R. Avery on Sept. 10, 1949. Walter predeceased her on July 22, 2004.

Betty drove for Norwich school bus routes and worked numerous years in the field of providing home and health care to individuals. She was an excellent cook and baker and especially enjoyed making wonderful, and delicious, holiday baked items. Betty learned cake decorating and candy making and then perfected those techniques by taking orders for decorated cakes, all types of cakes from doll cakes to wedding cakes. At Easter she would prepare panorama eggs crafted from sugar.

Betty avidly collected, and used, many "slice and dice" kitchen gadget inventions, often discovered via infomercials. Her love of crafts was evident with her projects of knitting, crocheting, handmade braided rugs, liquid embroidery, and ceramics. Betty indeed had a green thumb whether it was an assortment of houseplants, vegetable gardening or greenhouse gardening. Betty loved having and taking care of her birds, and she had canaries, parakeets, zebra finches and love birds, although not all at the same time.

She enjoyed summer tent camping with her young family at Rocky Neck State Park and at Bluff Point in Groton. Hopeville Pond, Mohegan Park and the Mohegan Park Rose Garden were favorite day outing destinations for Betty and her young family. Betty was an enthusiastic Red Sox fan and closely followed her favorite womens' basketball teams in their televised games. She was a music lover, and her favorites were Johnny Cash, Harry Belafonte, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass and polka tunes. Betty enjoyed an evening out to play bingo and she enthusiastically played bingo at Colonial Health and Rehabilitation too.

Betty is survived by two daughters and four sons, Judith Rice of Poulsbo, Wash., Janet Knap of Littleton, N.H., Jeffery (Karen) of Meriden, John of Concord, Vt., James of Guildhall, Vt., and Joseph of Jefferson, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Additionally, Betty is survived by her brother Raymond of Baltic; and her sister, Barbara Kent of Groton.

Two brothers, Richard Jr. and Thomas, predeceased her.

A special note of appreciation and heartfelt thanks goes to Maria O'Connor for her loving help, visits and friendship to Betty. Thank you to Noah White of East Lyme Masonicare Home Health and Hospice for his professional dedication and compassionate care of Betty.

Arrangements are private. Donations may be made to East Lyme Masonicare Home Health and Hospice, 339 Flanders Road, Suite 215, East Lyme, CT 06333 in Betty's memory.

You're with the Angels now Grammy you're at peace And in no more pain..I Was glad I was able to make that trip to come see you on your final days .. And hold your hand and give you a message from auntie judy.. It made me sad To have to say goodbye I to remember the days when I was younger just like Carla going to your house and I was riding in the wheelbarrow and you park it beside the pond and the wheelbarrow fell over and I ended up in the pond ...And those crazy geese you had that did not like me very much... But I would like to add on the grandchildren there are two great Great grand sons Gabriel and Bentley and a great Great Granddaughter due in March You are now an angel up in heaven please give grandpa hugs and kisses I will miss you Grammy

Our condolences to Betty's family. Betty was a good friend of my Mother and Father, I have fond memories of riding the horses in Pachaug Forest and at the house in Norwich. Mom and Betty were good friends making candy and baked goods together. Unfortunately we lost Mom on Oct.12th, so now these two friends are together watching over all of us. Rest in Peace Betty you will be missed.

I know I came to have a love of nature and the outdoors from you, my dear Mom. You instilled being outside and walking and breathing fresh air from my earliest childhood memories. I have always been intrigued with cloud formations and their colors. Now when I look to the skies for those clouds and their endless variations I think of you Mom. With love always, Judy

Grandma, even though our communication was less through my adulthood, I have such great childhood memories of you and I. I remember visiting you often as a child, and all the great things a child should remember about their grandparents. You always had goodies available and just a fun place to get away for a small one. I thank you for those sweet memories. You are not in pain anymore, and have gone to a more peaceful place. Love your Grand Daughter , Carla Sue

Elizabeth, ( I always called her that), was such a bright spot in my day. We both cried the day I told her I would no longer be her nurse as I was taking a different position in the company. I still would see her but not as frequently. She taught me many cooking 'secrets' and I listened to her tales of driving the school bus, and of her children and husband. She was a tough woman and will be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this sad time.
