Emerson Malcolm Obituary

Groton - Emerson Milton Malcolm, 87, of 56 Knoll Drive, Groton, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at the Groton Regency .

Emerson was born in Hingham, Mass., on Dec. 20, 1925, to the late Chester W. and Isabella M. (Mackenzie) Malcolm, and attended Hingham High School until the break out of World War II, then joined the U.S. Navy in Oct. of 1943. After becoming a submariner, he served for twenty years, retiring as a chief petty officer of the U.S. Hardhead in Oct. of 1963. He joined General Dynamics Electric Boat of Groton in Nov. 1963, retiring in June 1990, after 27 years of service. He was the co-founder of the Golden Eagle Ceramic Studio of Groton for 40 years.

Emerson was a lifetime member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans, Life Member of World War II, Holland Club, and the Fleet Reserves Assoction of Groton. He was a longtime member of the Shennecossett Beach Club in Groton and past Board of Directors member.

He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth (Ulvila) Malcolm, who passed away on May 5, 2009; his parents; his four brothers; and four sisters.

Emerson is survived by two sons, Jeffery D. Malcolm his wife, Mary, of Stafford, Steven B. Malcolm and significant other, Menchu Rincal, of Groton. His granddaughter, Paige A. Hoffman and husband, Ricardo Hoffman Jr., and their two daughters, Savannah E. and Reina D. Hoffman of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. His grandson, Ryan A. Malcolm and significant other, Kelly Hughes, with their daughter, Lilly-Jean P. Malcolm of Richmond, Va.; also two brothers; and many nieces and nephews.

Emerson enjoyed the freedom of life, bird watching, the girls UConn and the Connecticut Sun basketball teams. Emerson will be remembered for his passion, kindness, wittiness and his endless storytelling and his endearing love for his family.

A burial service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Hall Place Cemetery, 61 Crescent St., West Quincy, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the World War II Submarine Veterans Memorial East, c/o Submarine Veterans Club, Inc., 40 School St., Groton, CT 06340.
