Kenneth Bird Obituary

Waterford - Kenneth B. Bird, 54, of Waterford, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 21, 2013, in West Greenwich, R.I.

He was born in Norwich, on April 25, 1959, the son of Nancy (Turello) Bird and the late Edwin Guy Bird. He was the husband of Susan Kelly-Bird.

Mr. Bird was a 1977 graduate of Waterford High School. Ken along with his dear friend, Dave Smith, started Dependable Contracting Services in 2004, and have become very well respected contractors and builders throughout Eastern Connecticut.

Ken was a friend of Bill W's for 30 years and was the first person to reach out and volunteer to help.

Ken was an avid dirt bike enthusiast who enjoyed his weekend runs with his son, Jason and his partner, Dave. He additionally enjoyed golfing with his wife, racing at the Waterford Speedbowl, traveling, and helping his friends in need.

Ken had an innate ability to make a room laugh with his amazing sense of humor.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a son, Jason Kenneth Bird and daughter-in-law, Katie LaChappelle of Oakdale; a brother, Ed Bird of Waterford; aunts, Jane Turner of Waterford, Josephine Weinberg of New London, Alice Trakas of Niantic; a niece, Elise Frechette; and a stepson, Zachary Lusk of Westerly. He is also survived by his mother and father-in-law, Dottie and Jim Kelly; sister-in-law, Karen Kelly; brother-in-law, James Kelly; and his beloved dogs, Peanut, Louis, and Jet.

Calling hours are Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Ken's family would like to suggest casual attire.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Bill W, Connecticut Humane Society, Wounded Warriors Project, or a charity of your choice.

Sue,Ed and all Ken's family--I'm sorry for your loss, I knew Ken from way back in the program, 1983, and remember him as someone who was excited about life ~ who lived his dreams..who knew what he wanted to do and did it...so glad he had a good life..my thoughts have definitely been with you since I heard about his passing...definitely in my prayers too. Although many years have passed, its hard to think about a world without him in it.

As Kenny's neighbor, I enjoyed meeting up with him somewhere during his evening walks with the pups....we'd talk politics, construction, mechanical projects, motorcycles, and of course, any topic of local interest. Ken was a true gentleman and always there to lend a helping hand and cheerful smile...Sue too. God blessed me with the opportunity to get to know Ken; to share his concerns for the betterment of society; and to be the giving hand when help was needed. We are in a much better world because of the inspiration and good nature he brought to others. Lynne and I will think of him often....be at peace my friend, knowing you served God and your fellow man well!

Dear Ed and the rest of Ken's family, I have known Kenny since 7th grade and we were friends all though high school. We hung out in a big group of kids in junior high going to the movies and just doing the crazy things kids that age could do. I will always remember him for the funny man he grew up to become.Losing a classmate is hard, however losing a husband, dad and brother and son is even harder,I know some of this first hand. I am sending my thoughts and prayers to the whole family. And Linda I am not forgetting you, Love to you all. God Bless you all and may Kenny rest in peace

A servant's heart: Giving freely of your time, talents and resources for the betterment of others while expecting nothing in return. This is what Kenny showed to so many of us throughout his life. His attitude, humor, smile and generosity were infectious. He seemed to be unable to rest if he knew there was someone who could use his help. He truly made a difference in so many lives that there is no doubt is in Heaven's gates.

Someone mentioned his humor in another message. Ken had that type of humor that even if you were having the worst day ever, he could make you laugh within minutes... and not just giggling laughter... the type that made your stomach hurt from laughing so hard.

Sue, your marriage with Ken was not just of one between a man and woman or husband and wife, but one between two very best friends. You two are inspirational. We love you both dearly and are deeply saddened by Ken's leaving this world.
