Melvin Carson Obituary

Waterford - Melvin E. Carson, 76, of 9 Scotch Cap Road, Quaker Hill, died on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013. Mel passed away peacefully at home in the loving company of his family.

Mel was born in New London, on June 28, 1937, the son of Melvin Carson and Alice (McDonald) Carson. Mel attended New London High School, where he met his wife, Nancy I. (Silva) Carson, who passed away in December 2008. They were married on Valentine's Day, 1959.

Mel had an honorable career of service to his community and country. In 1958, as an enlisted sailor in the Navy, he was a crew member aboard the USS Nautilus during its historic first submerged voyage to the North Pole. From 1970 to 1981, Mel served the Quaker Hill Fire Dept., ultimately becoming fire chief. Mel had distinguished careers as a draftsman at Electric Boat and sales manager for Shipman's Fire Equipment Co. Even in retirement, Mel continued to serve his community as fire commissioner for the Town of Waterford.

As sad as his passing is, his family takes comfort in knowing that Mel lived a full and happy life. In 1993, Mel realized his lifelong dream of owning a restaurant when he opened Mel's Place, which continues to be a local favorite in Quaker Hill. He captained a friend's ship all the way from the Bahamas to Connecticut. He spent every day surrounded by his friends and family, and he continued his lifelong hobbies of fishing and skiing until the end.

Mel was predeceased byhis wife, Nancy, and his sister, Joan Carson Toscano.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David and Kathie Carson; his daughter, Debbie Schildt; and his grandchildren, Christopher E. Schildt, Daniel Schildt, Alyssa Carson, and Heather Carson. Mel is also survived by four brothers-in-law, Bill Silva, Bernard Devine, Don Brown, and Sam Toscano; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct 25, at the Quaker Hill Fire Department, 17 Old Colchester Road, Quaker Hill. A celebration of his life will immediately follow the service.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Quaker Hill Fire Department.

The Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montuak Ave., New London, has been entrusted with his care.

Dad, My heart is broken, I miss you terribly. You taught me to be kind to others and to help those in need. You guided me through life without negativity but with love and patience, letting me make my own mistakes and then make them right. You taught me how to be a loving daughter, sister, mother and friend. The most important thing I learned was to be happy and live life. I hope I can continue your legacy as you would want me to. You were and always will be my Hero!!

Melvin, your presence was always like a ray of sunshine with bubbles. There were giggles in your voice. Somehow you touched the lives of all who knew you in some special way; like you bestowed an individual gift by simply being yourself. I never got to tell you how grateful I am to have received mine, but I'm sure you knew it already. Good Journey to you...

Our deepest sympathies to all family and friends of Mel. The staff at Grossman's Seafood will greatly miss seeing him weekly and talking about the fishing/skiing trips he took. I had the pleasure of fishing with Mel once and what a blast that was. It actually cracked me up. He was fishing from the captains chair out of the starboard side window..
