Michael Romano Obituary

New London - Michael P. Romano, 91, of New London, entered eternal life on Sept. 1, 2013, at Bayview Health Care Center in Waterford.

He was born Jan. 13, 1922, in New London, the son of the late Marco and Catherine (Discordia) Romano. He graduated from the former Chapman Technical High School in 1940. He was a proud World War II U.S. Army veteran serving from 1942 to 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart and other medals and citations. He served in the 10th Armored Infantry Division and fought in the infamous Battle of the Bulge.

He was united in marriage to the former Anna Gencarelli on Aug. 23, 1947; Mrs. Romano passed away on April 21, 2005.

Mr. Romano was a letter carrier for 30 years with the New London Post Office, retiring in 1977. He was president of the Disabled Veterans Association, New London Postal Letter Carriers Association, New London VFW Post 189, and AARP New London Chapter.

He is survived by his son, Michael P. Romano Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Niantic; three grandsons, Marc and Amy Romano of Old Mystic, Patrick and Jocelyn Romano of Boynton Beach, Fla., and John Romano of Orlando, Fla; four great-grandchildren, Brayden Romano, Kenneth Miller, Olivia and Julia Romano; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three siblings, Mario and Salvatore Romano, and Mary DiMaggio.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Sept. 4, at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. The funeral will assemble at 9 a.m. on Thursday and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church. Entombment will be in St. Mary Cemetery Mausoleum with military honors.

My condolences to the Romano Family. I personally did not know him well, but my husband who is Salvatore's Grandson knew him. He will be missed and is probably dancing with the rest of the family.

Mike was a true Gentleman, never had a bad word to say about anyone. Worked at the post office with him his last few years there. I'm glad that Mike enjoyed a long retirement, he deserved it.
