Norman Vargas Obituary

Waterford - Norman King Vargas, 82, of Waterford, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, Aug. 1, 2013, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, with his loving family by his side.

Norm was born in New London, on May 10, 1931, the son of the late Antonio and Maria (DaSilva) Vargas. Norm was a 1949 graduate of Chapman Technical High School and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. While serving in Germany, he met his wife of 58 years, Marianne Schmitt. They were married on Oct. 16, 1954, in Schweinfurt, Germany.

Norm retired from Pfizer in Groton after 38 years of service, where he worked as the physical plant manager. He especially loved being on the boat, while fishing with his family and close friends. He also loved gardening, reading, doing family projects and spending time with Marianne.

He was predeceased by his brother, Abilio (Bill) Vargas; his sister, Olivia (Lee) Ayers; and brother-in-law's, Vernon Vesey and Amos Bolieau .

Besides his wife, he is survived by his sisters, Mary Bolieau of Westerly and Filomena Vesey of Uncasville; and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Vargas. He is also survived by his five loving children, Tony and his wife, Susan, of Tolland, Heidi and her husband, Paul Marshall, of Quaker Hill, Kenny Vargas and Candace Reynolds of Gloucester, Mass., Olivia and her husband, Mark Hill, of Waterford, and Barbara and her husband, Rob Palmer, of Quaker Hill; along with eight grandchildren, Shaunna, Kevin, Ryan, Amber, Amanda, Adam, Taylor and Drew; four great-grandchildren, Kaygan, Charlie, Aubrey and Patrick; and many loving extended family and friends, who will all miss him dearly.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, followed by a memorial service planned for 6:30 p.m., at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St. New London. The family invites you to a celebration of life to follow the memorial service.

Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.
