Owen Sherry Obituary

Stonington - Owen E. Sherry, 95, of Pawcatuck, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Westerly, on April 30, 1918, to parents Owen and Mary (Pearl) Sullivan Sherry. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Dennehey) Sherry.

Owen was a parishioner of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Pawcatuck. He attended the Boston University School of Management where he participated in R.O.T.C. Owen served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1945 detached to the Army Air Corps, he served in the Army finance department, mostly in North Carolina. He was almost refused by the army when the examining doctor asked "What line can you read?" Owen replied " None of them!" Needing all the able bodied men they could get, the doctor instructed him to "walk closer."

Returning home after the service, Owen joined the A. Wimpheimer, Inc. corporation dba American Velvet as a cost accounting clerk in their finance department. After more than forty years, he retired as corporate secretary and director.

In his youth, Owen was involved in competitive figure skating and belonged to the elite Figure Skating Club of Boston where only the very best were invited to join. He also enjoyed boating, fishing and target shooting. Over the years, Owen owned a 32' ACF, and later a 30' Chris Craft. He belonged to the Westerly Yacht Club and the Wadawanuck Club, and during his competitive shooting days belonged to the Mystic Rod & Gun Club and the Groton Sportmen's Club.

He is survived by his cousins, Thomas Perkins and his wife, Grace, of Waterford and Sherry Stancliffe of Cincinnati, Ohio; and his sister-in-law, Mary Sherry of Stratford.

Mr. Sherry was also predeceased by twin brothers, Maurice and James Sherry who both enjoyed lifelong careers at Sikorsky Aircraft. Maurice was active in the development of the Blackhawk Helicopter and James held a patent for the tail rotor of the Blackhawk.

Owen Sherry was gentleman of the old school and made friends of everyone he met. Quiet and unassuming, he was undoubtedly one of the smartest people in the room at any gathering. He will be sorely missed.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2013, at St. Mary Church, 95 Main St., Stonington. Burial will follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Pawcatuck with full military honors. There are no calling hours.

I've only had the privilege of knowing Mr. Sherry for a few weeks. He was a very pleasent person to be around, kind-hearted, and very polite. He was a true gentleman. I wish I had more time with him. I will always remember you, Owen. I wished it did not have to end so quickly. R.I.P.

I waited on Mr. and Mrs. Sherry for many years at Friendly's. They were the sweetest couple. I remember the way he cared for her when she wasn't doing so well, always such a gentleman. After Mrs. Sherry's passing he'd come in for breakfast weekly and was such a quiet and sweet man. Rest in Peace and many prayers are with his family.
