Paul Feeney Obituary

Stonington - Paul J. Feeney Jr., 47, of Stonington, husband of Valerie (Fitzpatrick) Feeney, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, New London.

Born in White Plains, N.Y., he was the son of the late Paul J. Feeney Sr. and Mary (Munley) Feeney. Paul moved to Westport in 1976 and was a 1983 graduate of Staples High School. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and later graduated from the University of Connecticut.

He was a resident of Stonington since 2004, previously residing in Groton for many years. Paul was formerly employed with Pfizer from 1993 to 2007 in various positions. Mr. Feeney was an assistant instructor at Yamashita International Karate Mystic Dojo. He was a highly respected instructor, excellent with children and adults of all ages. He joined the dojo in January 2004, received his 1st-degree black belt in 2008 and received his 2nd-degree black belt in 2011. He will be sadly missed by the dojo family.

Paul was also an avid motorcycle enthusiast and thoroughly enjoyed riding his Harley year round. He also loved to cook.

In addition to his wife, he leaves three sons, Ryan, Conor and Aidan Feeney, all of Stonington.

His sons were his greatest sense of pride and joy. He was an active participant in their scouting experiences, having served as den leader, cubmaster, merit badge counselor and committee member while his sons belonged to Pack 33 Groton, Pack 37 Stonington and Troop 17 Groton.

All three boys were also black belts-junior black belts with Groton Parks and Recreation, a common experience they shared which was a powerful uniting force not to be forgotten.

Outside of scouting and karate, he attended his son's football games, track events, band concerts and numerous other activities.

He also leaves behind a sister, Mary Frances Stevenson and brother-in-law, David, of Charleston, S.C.; two nieces, Katharine and Elaine Stevenson of Charleston, S.C.; his in-laws, Patrick and Maria Fitzpatrick of Trumbull; and sister-in-law, Hilary Fitzpatrick of Fairfield.

He was predeceased by his brother, Michael.

His family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 15, at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic (51 Williams Ave.) A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Sacred Heart Church, 56 Sacred Heart Drive, Groton. Burial will be private in Westport.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Paul Feeney Troop 17G Scholarship Fund, c/o Chelsea Groton, P.O. Box 11, North Stonington, CT 06359.

Inspired to look up an old friend, I discovered that Paul passed on eight years ago. I´m saddened by this news as he and I were both coworkers and close friends many years ago and lost touch. He was a wonderful person, kind and free spirited. He made me laugh and I felt at peace, at home and relaxed. Paul was very deep, very sensitive and with his brilliant mind, a kind and gentle soul. He was one-of-a-kind and brought love and peace to my life. He will be missed and remains within my heart and mind.

Val, Ryan, Conor & Aiden,

"It's the little things, the small, everyday occurrences that you'll remember. The laughs, the stories, the smiles. And even though it seems like you can never recover from your loss, it is these very memories that will help push the pain away and bring back the smiles."

I am so grateful I got to see him last month at the Mystic Irish Parade and got one last huge hug from him.

Paul brought so many happy moments in our life and left us with a treasure trove of memories. We will never be able to forget him. We are praying for you in this difficult time.
