Richmond Kelly Obituary

New London - Richmond "Rick" Charles Kelly, 64, of New London, died on Aug. 4, 2013, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. Rick fought a courageous battle following surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital, never losing hope that he would come home.

He was born on Dec. 16, 1948, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the only child of John Henry Kelly and Helen (Richmond) Kelly.

Rick was involved in scouting from the age of seven, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He was always proud to have attended several Boy Scout Jamborees throughout the United States. He graduated from Friends Seminary in New York City in 1967, Temple University in Philadelphia in 1969 with an associate degree in engineering, and the University of Dayton (Ohio) in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in technology. He began his career at Arc Electric in Manhattan as an electrical project manager for many important construction sites including, One City Place in lower Manhattan. He joined his college friend, Les Tager, at their family business, Baldwin Stewart Electric of Hartford and New Haven. In 1983, he joined Northeast Utilities at Millstone Power Station and remained with the company as it transition to Dominion Nuclear of Richmond, Va. Over his 30 year career, he held a variety of positions at Millstone. His most recent was the site coordinator for the motor pool, "If it moved or had wheels, Rick had his hands on it."

Rick was always proudest of his Quaker education at Friends Seminary. It instilled a philosophy of tolerance and acceptance of all people. He loved European travel, food, spending time with his family, and reminiscing about growing up in Manhattan. He was the ultimate handyman with many unfinished projects at the time of his passing. He thought nothing of traveling across three states to get a great meal.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; his daughter, Emily Richmond Kelly of Niantic; his cousins, Dr. Maureen Kelly of Tucson, Ariz., Kathleen Kelly, William Kelly and his wife, Jane, all of Middletown, R.I.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Pequot Chapel, 857 Montauk Ave., New London. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 181 Ocean Ave., New London.

The family would like to thank the many loving nurses, therapists, and physicians who participated in his care at L+M Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to A Moveable Feast, c/o St. James Church, 76 Federal St., New London, CT 06320 or Lawrence + Memorial Dana Farber Cancer Center Building Fund, 365 Montauk Ave., New London, CT 06320.

I was Rick's room mate at Temple University's Peabody Hall in 1968? for two semesters. We lost touch in later years. I will never forget his ready laugh ( audible the full length of the hallway). He loved the record album for "Promises Promises". We listened to it every day. Judy Collins was another favorite.

Dear Kathy and Emily
My fondest memory of Rick was on a Christmas Eve when he came racing into Mitchell College Children's Learning Center and said that Emily had just described a toy and he had to get it for her. He explained that it had colored pegs that you pressed into patterns on a light box that made them glow. We yelled " Lite Bright" and he raced back out the door to make his little girl's wish come true. He was so devoted to the ladies in his life. What an amazing man. I am so grateful to have known him. God bless you and I will keep you in my heart and prayers. Love Cyndi (CJ)

To all of Rick's family....I too had the honor and pleasure of working with Rick in the Site Facilities Dept at Millstone. He was a gentle man with a big heart and always smiling. Since leaving Millstone a number of years ago, I was lucky to have run into Rick many times at S&S where he would always catch me up on things and tell a quick story that always made me laugh. I will miss that.

Please accept my deepest sympathies. I was the recipient of Rick's kindness and helpfulness many times over the years at work. On more than one occasion Rick brought coffee to our group while we were working outside in the winter cold. He wasn't our supervisor, or our manager, but acted out of the compassion that was part of his core values. He was always a "go to" guy who both knew how to get things done and was willing to help in any way he could. I am so sorry for your loss. I will miss him both personally and professionally, and so glad to have known him.

Rick was my friend and I will miss him. We always had lots of laughs together with our group at lunch. He enjoyed telling stories but he was also a good listener and his advice was helpful so many times to me and to others. I'm so sorry that he had to leave us so soon.

I first met Rick 46 years ago in the dorm at Temple University. He and I and about 20 other guys lived in Peabody Hall on the 4th floor. Rick influenced each of us in some special way. Rick and I went to NYC almost every weekend and stayed in his mothers apartment in the Village. Rick taught me how to appreciate "the City". We went to restaurants, concerts, Broadway shows and did the town. We were in Times Square many New Years Eves. We had a bond of mutual love that, I'm sure, everyone who has known Rick feels as deeply. Kathy and Emily, may your hearts be comforted.

Kathy and Emily- I'm sorry for your loss. There isn't enough space here to capture all the memories I have of your "Rick". I do realize now that MANY of my memories are ones of us (me) testing his "tolerance, acceptance", and most assuredly sharpening his "Eagle Scout" skills. I feel blessed to have known him and worked with him at Millstone. A gentle giant ... who I remember carried a stylish little lunch bag and a big smile whenever he came to the cafeteria. I will remember that smile in his picture, the love he had for his family , and the compassion he had for all of us. May you be comforted by memories, peace.

Kathy & Emily - So very sorry for your loss. Rick was one of the nicest guys within a great group of people I had the pleasure of working with at Millstone in the 80's. Whenever I think of him I always say "that man loved food". He was always smiling and was a great source of advice (and always had a story to go with it). He will be missed. Rayna
