Robert M. Conroy

Ledyard - Robert M. Conroy, 89, of Boulder Way, died on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Pendleton Healthcare.

On May 30, 1923, he was born in Newport, R.I., the son of John and Ann (Lawton) Conroy. He grew up in Groton and was a graduate of Robert E. Fitch High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged in April of 1946 and returned to Connecticut. For over 35 years, he worked at the Naval Underwater Systems Center in New London.

He was the loving husband of Elizabeth (Busch) Conroy. They met just after his retirement and were married at the Taftville Congregational Church on March 3, 1984.

Robert was a patient, kind, and gentle person. He was an avid reader and a talented saxophone and clarinet player. He played both instruments as a member of the high school band and continued to play throughout his life. He loved going to the beach, spending time with his wife, and having in depth conversations. He was very knowledgeable about a wide variety of subjects and had a wonderful sense of humor.

In addition to his wife, Elizabeth, he is survived by his daughter, Susan Conroy of Norwich; three stepchildren, Sheryl Champlin and husband, Harry, of Mystic, Kristin Partosan and husband, Scott, of Mystic, and William Adams of Ledyard; three grandchildren, Ivan, Chelsae, and Ryan; a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, John and William Conroy.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at Faith Lutheran Church, 625 Poquonnock Road, Groton. Burial will be at the Connecticut Veteran's Cemetery at a later date.
