Robert Manwaring "Bob" Holby

Groton - Robert "Bob" Manwaring Holby, 97, longtime resident of Groton Long Point, died Sunday, March 17, 2013, at Fairview, Groton.

He was born June 29, 1915, in Darien, the son of Lewis C.L. Holby and Leslie (Bosworth) Holby. Bob grew up in Darien, Larchmont, N.Y. and Niantic, where he worked for his father at the Millstone Quarry. He attended Bulkeley School in New London.

Bob graduated from Worchester Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. After graduating, he was employed by the Budd Company in Philadelphia, Pa. Having obtained his pilot's license while in college, Bob enlisted in the Navy during World War II and flew PBY's and Venturas. Upon leaving the Navy at the end of World War II, Bob worked for his father, a local builder. In 1957, he began working at Electric Boat in the nuclear program until his retirement in 1991.

Bob was active in the Groton Long Point Association and was a member of the Water Board and the Conservation Committee, as well as a volunteer (and charter member) of the Groton Long Point Fire Department.

Bob was married to Dorothy "Dotty" (Taylor) Holby for 66 years and was predeceased by her in 2008.

He is survived by four children, Pamela H. Arguelles and husband, Roger, Denise T. Volpe and husband, James, Karen J. Holby, and Robert M. Holby Jr. and his wife, Cindy (Hudnall); his nephew, Mark Holby; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a beloved family member and friend to all. A Memorial Service for Bob will be held at a later date.
