Scott Blackburn Obituary

Waterford - Scott Christopher Blackburn of Quaker Hill, returned home to the Lord our savior on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013.

He was born in Windham, on Sept. 26, 1965, to Gordon and Marion Blackburn, he was predeceased by his brother, Craig Blackburn. Scott attended Groton schools and graduated from Ella Grasso Technical High School. He was employed by General Dynamics Electric Boat Company for thirty years. Scott started his career at Electric Boat as an electrician and quickly found his passion as a firefighter. He rose through the ranks at EBFD and became a fire inspector. He was a dedicated member of the fire service.

Scott proudly and patriotically served with the Connecticut Statewide Honor Guard. He participated in the annual National Fallen Fire Fighters Foundation's memorial service at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. In the performance of his duties with the Connecticut Statewide Honor Guard, he was part of a contingent that laid a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. This was a great honor for Scott. He was a man who stood for God and country.

Scott had a great love for his country and at age twelve, had the opportunity to go on a month long cross country excursion with his parents. It was on this trip that he visited many historic sites and national parks, which sparked his lifelong love for the history of the United States. In later years, he visited Gettysburg and immersed himself in the history of this hallowed ground.

Among Scott's many interests and hobbies, he was particularly proud of earning his private pilot's license. Shortly after getting his license, he flew from Groton to NYC, piloted the plane along the Hudson River and circled the Statue of Liberty 3 times. Scott's other hobbies were boating, fishing, hiking, fly tying, skeet shooting, golfing, bicycling, woodworking and keeping up with the latest technology.

On Nov. 19, 2013, Scott married Sandra Bracero-Blackburn at Lawrence+ Memorial Hospital in New London. She was the light of his life and the unwavering solid rock of love and compassion that he leaned on in his final days.

Besides his parents and wife, Scott is survived by his loving brother, Stephen Blackburn; step-children, Robert and Christie Woodhalt, Alexandra and Angel Luis Colon; and his dear friends who were like family to him, Don Baer, Sally Rugh and her sons, Dwaine and Daryl Rugh, Constance Johnson and her daughters, Tara Lozada and Janise Gabco. Scott was a surrogate grandfather to Charlie, Allie, Kyle, Christian, Hashim and Ava Marie. He also leaves behind his loyal canine companion, Jamie.

Scott was a man who loved well and was well loved. He will be deeply missed. Scott's family would like to extend a special thank you to Mark Grader for his kindness and grace during this difficult time.

"They slipped the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God" ~ Ronald Reagan.
